Chapter One – Shadows of the Past New York City never truly slept. Its streets were alive with flashing lights, distant sirens, and secrets hidden behind every corner. Some people saw opportunity in the city. Others saw danger. For Victoria Moretti, New York was her kingdom. Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Moretti estate overlooking Manhattan, she watched the city in silence. Dressed in a tailored black suit, she looked untouchable. Powerful. Cold. That was what everyone believed. She had learned long ago that emotions were a weakness. Her fingers tightened around the crystal glass in her hand as memories forced their way back. She was only nine years old when her mother died after a long illness. The warmth in their home disappeared with her. After that, only silence remained. Her father, Alessandro Moretti, was feared throughout New York. He never hugged her. Never told her he loved her. Instead, he taught her one lesson. "Trust no one." By sixteen, she knew how to negotiate with crime families better than most grown men. By twenty-five, she had inherited everything after her father's assassination. She never cried at his funeral. He was killed in the line of duty when Emily was eleven. After his death, her mother slowly disappeared into alcoholism. Emily became the adult long before she was supposed to. She cooked. She cleaned. She paid bills. She protected the only family she had left. There were nights she cried herself to sleep, wishing her father would walk through the front door one more time. But he never did. She picked up the photograph and smiled sadly. "I made it, Dad," she whispered. "I hope you'd be proud of me." A knock on the apartment door broke the silence. Her phone vibrated.
