Late Saturday, after taking care of the Carlos problem, Morgan and Yingyi prepared to meet Peter Valois. Andy Marino showed up with questions and instructions.
“What happened?” she asked.
“There was an automobile accident,” Yingyi said. “Quite serious, resulting in fatal injuries.”
“Where?”
“On the ravine road leading to Lake Cuyamaca. About eight miles from the highway in an isolated area. A piece of guardrail’s missing on one of the turns. The driver lost control for some reason and plunged off the road. Into a steep drop off.”
“And?”
“There was an explosion. As I said, quite serious.” Yingyi glanced at Morgan.
Morgan raised his eyebrows and added, “Right. That’s what happened. There was a ball of fire down in the gulch. No one around to see it.”
