Chapter 14 — The Ritual Begins
The clearing looked exactly as it had three years ago — the same torches lining the perimeter, the same watching circle of pack members, the same electric charge of anticipation hanging in the night air — except this time Elena stood at the center not as a rejected omega, but as a woman whose fate the entire pack world seemed to be holding its breath to determine.
Tobias Rourke led the ceremony, ancient robes replacing his usual pack elder attire, a stone bowl of dark liquid balanced in his weathered hands. Damian stood beside Elena, exactly where he'd promised, his presence a solid, warm line at her side that she found herself unconsciously leaning toward despite everything.
"Elena Marsh." Tobias's voice carried the weight of ceremony, formal in a way she hadn't heard from him before. "Do you consent to bloodline verification under the old laws of this territory, understanding both the risk and the possibility this ritual represents?"
"I do." Her voice came out steadier than she felt.
Tobias dipped a ceremonial blade into the bowl, then drew it in a shallow line across her palm — a sting, sharp and immediate, followed by a warmth that spread up her arm far faster than a simple cut should. Blood welled dark against her skin, and Tobias caught three drops in the stone bowl, murmuring words in a language Elena didn't recognize but somehow, impossibly, understood on some instinctive level.
The moonlight overhead seemed to brighten, or maybe that was just her vision sharpening, colors bleeding too vivid at the edges the way they had for one dizzying second three years ago at the territory border.
"Ashwood blood, if it flows in this vessel, rise and be known," Tobias intoned, his voice echoing strangely across the clearing.
For a moment, nothing happened. Elena felt Damian's hand find hers, steady and grounding, and she held on tighter than she meant to.
Then the pain hit.
It started in her chest, the exact spot where the bond had torn three years ago, and spread outward like wildfire, every nerve in her body lighting up at once. She heard herself cry out, felt her knees buckle, and only Damian's arm catching her kept her upright as the world around her dissolved into blinding gold light.
The crown. The moonlight column. The dream, except it wasn't a dream anymore, it was happening inside her own body, some ancient thing waking up after a century of dormancy and clawing its way to the surface all at once—
"Elena!" Damian's voice, distant and frantic, cut through the overwhelming sensation. "Stay with me. Elena, look at me—"
The pain crested, unbearable, and for one terrifying second Elena genuinely believed she was about to die in this clearing, three years after nearly dying of heartbreak in the exact same spot.
Then, just as suddenly as it had built, the pressure broke.
Power flooded through her like a dam giving way, warm and vast and entirely, undeniably hers — not borrowed, not granted, but remembered, like a language she'd always known but never had cause to speak. She felt the pack around her with a clarity she'd never experienced before, every heartbeat, every held breath, every wolf in that clearing suddenly perceptible to her in a way that had nothing to do with rank or bond.
She opened her eyes, and the gasps that rippled through the watching crowd told her everything she needed to know before Tobias's shaking voice confirmed it.
"Ashwood blood confirmed," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, staring at her with something between awe and fear. "Gods help us all. The line isn't extinct. It never was."
