Chapter 16: Reason

Akihiko smiled and came in the house, he sat down on the sofa whilst Zoe went into the kitchen. She came in with a kitchen timer and set it to 5 minutes. Zoe sat down and press the go button.

“Really?” Akihiko said 

“Really. You have got 4mins and 30 seconds” Zoe said drily.

“I ...wanted to first apologise for what I did. I was a coward and I was scared of what I feel for you” Akihiko

“OK” Zoe said

“I don’t come from a very good background when it comes to love. I have been burned badly in the past by someone. I thought she was the one and acted stupidly” Akihiko sadly.

“You? Acting stupidly?” Zoe said sarcastically

“I thought that is how love should feel. But Then I met you, you were like a breath of fresh air. It is so easy being with you, as easy as breathing” Akihiko said

“So I am easy? OK. 3 minutes left!” Zoe said drily

“That is not what I meant and you know it! I am trying to say is that you and I fit, you are my other half and I treated you like s**t” Akihiko sadism

“Yes you did treat me like s**t” Zoe said

“I will regret it for the rest of my life Zoe. Please just give me another chance to be with you and I swear I will never leave your side” Akihiko said

“No” Zoe said firmly

“What?” Akihiko said feeling like he just been stabbed through the heart.

“No, I don’t want to be with you Akihiko and I don’t want to give you another chance” Zoe explained. Just then then alarm on the Kitchen timer beeped.

“Oh dear time is up! Well I wish I could say it has been a pleasure, but it really hasn’t. But I do wish you luck in all your future endeavours” Zoe said standing up.

“Please Zoe, don’t do this. Tell me what I need to do to prove how I feel about you!” Akihiko begged. Something that he has never done with anyone before.

“There is nothing you can do. You made your choice Akihiko, you can’t just pick me up when you feel like. I loved you and I gave you my heart and you broke it. Worse still, you made me feel unworthy of your love! I don’t want to be with someone who makes me feel like that” Zoe said pointing to the door.

“I was an arrogant arsehole. It is me that is not worthy of you! Please Zoe!” Akihiko said

“No Akihiko! Now leave!” Zoe said firmly.

“But I love you my little Dragon” Akihiko mumbled 

“You should have thought about that before leaving me at the hospital” Zoe snapped.

Akihiko did not know what to do for a few seconds. His body and heart was telling him to sweep her up and kiss her utill she understood. But he didn’t he walked out of the house and said “You know where I am if if you need anything Zoe. Anything at all”

“I will never needed anything from you, so don’t hold your breath” Zoe said as she slammed the door shut. Zoe collapsed to the floor and started sobbing as she watched Akihiko walk away from her again.

When Akihiko got home, he went straight to the drinks cabinet and poured himself a large whiskey. He downed it and poured himself another one.

“What has happened this time?” Ena said with a tired sigh

“I tried to make it up Zoe and she rejected me. I tried to explain and even told her how I truly felt and she chucked me out, saying she wanted nothing from me”  Akihiko growled 

“Really. So tell me Akihiko, how do you feel about Zoe?” Ena said and Akihiko glared at the old man.

“You know already, I love the bones of that stubborn women” Akihiko said downing another drink.

“So a bit of distance has made the heart grow founder hey? I thought Alannah was your chance at true love?” Ena said stroking his chin

“f**k Alannah and f**k you Ena!” Akihiko snapped as he took the bottle of whiskey and went to his room. Akihiko slammed the door shut and fully intending to carry on drinking until his pain was numbed.

Ena sighed and went to the fridge. There he carefully got out a wiggle cake and put it carefully in a cake box. Carrying it out the door he shouted “I am going to the shops, do you want anything?” 

“More f*****g whiskey!” Was the reply and Ena sighed again as he went out the door.

Zoe had just made us her noddles for her dinner.  She had just sat down when she heard a bang at the door. With a sigh she got up and opened it.

“Ena?” Zoe said surprised

“Good evening Zoe, I come bearing a gift” Ena said opening the cake tin.

“You really don’t play fair Ena!” Zoe said seeing the wiggle sponge cake.

Ena chuckled and said “Can I come in child?”

“Hmm I suppose, but I warn you, I am not any mood for games” Zoe said letting Ena in. Ena walked in and saw she was eating dinner.

“ sorry to disturb your evening meal” Ena said

“Don’t worry, I have just made some green tea. Would you like a cup?” Zoe said politely 

“Thank you, that would be nice” Ena said and Zoe poured the tea out.

“So what can I do for you, like I didn’t know!”  Zoe said handing him a mug.

“Well yes, Akihkio has a way of becoming the topic of conversation, doesn’t he?” Ena said

“Doesn’t he just?” Zoe said with a small smile.

“He...has acted in a arrogant and disrespectful way. That letter was unforgivable and he knows it all to well” Ena said

“And? Zoe said

“But He is also honest, loyal and loving to a fault. His upbringing has made him uptight and twisted, something I will never forgive myself for” Ena said

“What do you mean?” Zoe said

“His Mother died giving birth to him, his father was a monster. Some of the things he did to Akihiko was unspeakable” Ena said sadly.

“Like want?” Zoe said

“Every time Akihiko failed at something, he would be punished. At first it was physical punishments like burning or whipping. But his Father thought that these punishments became ineffective. So he started to make him choose” Ena said

“Choose what?” Ena said

“A friend to die” Ena said quietly.

“You serious?” Zoe said gasping in shock and Ena nodded.

“I used to hear him weep at night about it and he still has nightmares. His Father treated women as objects to be used. If a women survived a night in bed with him, they were considered lucky. The screams of those poor girls still haunt my dream. Needless to say his father encouraged him to treat women the same” Ena said.

Everything started to make sense, the scarring, the night terrors and the fear of committing to anyone. Akihiko spent a life growing up being constantly abused both mentally and physically.

“Why are you telling me this?” Zoe said

“Because he loves you and I know you love him” Ena said simply 

“But he...he said I was a bit of fun and we had no future. He said I was not worthy of his love” Zoe said with tears in her eyes.

“Yes, but we all know that is not true. I have never seen him act with anyone, the way he acts with you” Ena said.

“Not even with Alannah” Zoe said bitterly

Ena chuckled and said “Don’t get me wrong, Alannah was an impressive women. However, she was never Akihiko’s soul mate. They bring out the absolute worst in each other and he knows it. He does not love Alannah, he loves you Zoe”

“He hurt me so badly Ena” Zoe said feeling the tears rolling down her face.

“I know child, but I know you have a big enough heart to forgive him” Ena said passing her a tissue.

“You don’t understand ..” Zoe said

“That some one is after you? Trust me child, Akihiko can look after himself. So the big question is, what are you going to do” Ena said.

Akihkio was cursing. Cursing the fact he had run out of whiskey and cursing the fact Ena had not returned from the shops. What is taking the old man so long? He thought furiously as he sat on the sofa in his room.Finally, there was a knock at the door.

“Finally old man! What took you so long?!” Akihkio snapped not bothering to look at the door when it opened.

“Jeez Akihkio, you stink like you taken a bath in booze!” Zoe said in a disapproving tone.

Akihkio turned and looked surprised “Zoe!”

“Well at least you still remember my name, that is a positive start!” Zoe said with a smile.

“I will remember you until my dying day” Akihkio murmured 

“Well that is good, because I intend to be with you until your dying day” Zoe said

“Don’t tease me!” Akihkio said slurring slightly 

“Who said I am teasing? Zoe said going over to him and sitting on the sofa.

“What? I don’t understand..” Akihkio said

“I love you Akihkio and I want to be with you. That is if you still want me?” Zoe said putting her hand on his knee. Akihkio picked up her had and began kissing her palm, he then put it to the side of of his face. He closed his eyes and the feel of her touch.

“Is that a yes?” Zoe said softly

“I will never leave your side again my Little Dragon” Akihkio swore with all his heart.
