Chapter 1
Gil Finch's first love, Avril Graytail, was pregnant.
He sent someone to cut open the heart of Pepper, the parrot I had raised for fifteen years, to draw blood.
"Parrot blood can cure stomach ailments; consider this your apology for always being jealous of Avril," he said.
I screamed at the top of my lungs. "I had given it half of my Moon‑descended White Wolf soul as a bridge to sustain your life and save you. If it dies, you will become crippled again, and the Thunder Pack will fall!"
Avril laughed glibly and ordered warriors to pin me to the snowy ground and pierce the back of my neck with three silver spikes.
Gil watched me bleeding, his smile mocking. "Are you making all wolves adore you through your lies?"
Pepper kept crying out on the operating table, "Mom, save me." After one agonizing scream, it fell still.
At that moment, I felt my heart crushed alive. Blood gushed from my mouth, nose, and ears.
My inner wolf let out a heartbreaking howl; I wanted to tear apart those who killed it. But because of the oath of gratitude, I couldn't harm any member of the Thunder Pack.
Hatred burned in my heart. I carried Pepper's body and went to find Gil's father, Elder Finch.
"You saved me back then, and in return I vowed to protect your Pack," I said. "Now Pepper is dead; I have to leave. You can fend for yourselves."
The cup in his hand fell to the floor and shattered.
The former fierce Thunder Alpha, now hunched and trembling, couldn't stop his hands from shaking. "Linda... did that bastard do it?"
I didn't answer.
Elder's lips quivered, and suddenly he slapped himself hard across the face. "I failed to teach him right; I raised a beast!" He slapped himself again, tears streaming down his aged face. "I will go and break his legs right now!"
"No need," I said softly, but Elder froze.
I stepped back coldly. "Elder, you saved my life from a hunter's trap years ago. I have repaid that debt with a century of service. In that century, I healed your son's legs and shielded the Pack from countless enemies. Now half of my wolf soul is destroyed; your favor is fully repaid."
Elder's eyes widened as he shook his head repeatedly. "No... Linda, please listen to me..."
I interrupted him and slowly rose to my feet. The double agony from my wolf soul and body nearly brought me to the ground, but I stood firm. "From now on, the fate of the Thunder Pack has nothing to do with me."
Elder's face reddened; fury made his gray‑white fur bristle. He opened a communicator and roared at Gil. "Gil, because of a half‑breed wolf, you have made such a grave mistake; you will ruin everything!" Anger and fear made his voice tremble.
Gil was indifferent; he even made Avril moan with pleasure. Through the communicator, they seemed to be entwined in bed. "Dad, you are old. An old wolf must have an old wolf's awareness. I am the current Alpha of this wolf clan, and I call the shots in this Pack. Not to mention a pet parrot; if Linda continues to be disobedient and comes whining to you over such trifles, I will banish her from the Pack."
Elder's face flushed crimson, and he cursed loudly. "How could I have fathered such an ungrateful son? Don't you remember the vows you swore to the Moon Goddess when you married Linda?"
Gil's cold voice now carried anger. "But that doesn't mean I will be fooled by her for a lifetime! Everything now is what she deserves!"
The moment the call ended, Avril's delighted shriek came through.
My eyes burned hotly, but I didn't cry. My tears had long dried up with Pepper's death.
Just then, the door opened and a wolf servant entered, bowing as he carried a wooden box. "Alpha orders Linda to eat this tonic as an apology for killing the parrot," he said.
I lifted the lid, and a pungent smell of wolfbane hit me. Inside were rotten roots soaked in wolfbane poison, nothing like a tonic. Startled and furious, I flung the wooden box hard to the ground.
Elder's face turned pale, and with a thud he dropped to his knees before me. He pleaded with tears in his eyes. "Linda, this cannot be true; the wolf servant must have made a mistake. For the sake of the time I saved you from the hunters, please forgive Gil's thoughtlessness. The Thunder Pack cannot afford to lose you!"
I looked down at my palm; my skin was already turning translucent.
Pepper's death had caused severe internal bleeding, leaving me gravely injured.
Yet memories from years past surfaced unbidden in my mind.
Gil's legs were shattered; he was so desperate he nearly went mad, even trying to kill himself several times.
The land's lifeblood was nearly drained, and the Thunder Pack was on the verge of collapse.
It was I who placed half my wolf soul into Pepper, using Pepper to bridge my wolf soul with Gil's so that he could stand again.
My Moon‑descended White Wolf bloodline nourished this land and sustained Gil's life.
But what did I get in return?
Nothing but Gil's wanton abuse and humiliation!
I shook off Elder's hand.
My voice was flat, betraying no emotion.
"You saved my life back then. I protected you all for a hundred years. That is enough. I should return to the Moon Goddess's service."
I gently cradled Pepper's stiff body in my arms.
Expressionless, I walked into the boundless white snow.
