Don’t Look at Him
The first thing I noticed about Eclipse University was the silence.
Not actual silence.
People were talking. Laughing. Rolling suitcases across stone walkways. Music blasted faintly from somewhere near the dorm buildings while expensive cars crawled through campus like they owned the road.
But underneath all of it, there was something else.
A strange stillness.
Like the entire campus was holding its breath.
I tightened my grip on my suitcase handle and glanced up at the massive black iron gates behind me.
ECLIPSE UNIVERSITY.
Prestigious. Elite. Impossible to get into unless you were rich, connected, or terrifyingly intelligent.
I was only here because of a scholarship.
And apparently, people could tell.
The girl brushing past me gave my worn duffel bag one quick look before smirking at her friend.
I ignored it.
Not everyone grew up with money.
Some of us grew up learning how to survive embarrassment quietly.
The wind shifted suddenly.
Cold.
Sharp.
I frowned slightly.
Weird.
The afternoon sun was still out, yet goosebumps crawled across my skin like a warning.
“Move.”
The deep male voice came from behind me.
I stepped aside instinctively just as a black SUV rolled slowly through the front drive.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
Students stopped talking.
Some moved out of the way too quickly.
Others stared openly.
The SUV door opened.
And him stepped out.
Tall.
Dark hair falling carelessly over his forehead.
Black shirt rolled at the sleeves.
Power built into every movement.
Not arrogant exactly.
Worse.
Certain.
Like he had never questioned whether the world belonged to him.
He didn’t look around the way normal people did. Didn’t hesitate. Didn’t search for approval.
People moved for him automatically.
My eyes narrowed slightly.
Who the hell was this guy?
A blond girl near me whispered dramatically to her friend.
“That’s Kael Vale.”
Her friend looked nervous immediately.
“Don’t stare.”
Naturally, I stared harder.
Kael shut the SUV door with one hand before slowly lifting his gaze toward the crowd.
Cold eyes.
Sharp jaw.
A faint scar near his cheek.
And something about him felt…
Wrong.
Not dangerous in the normal sense.
Dangerous in the way thunderstorms felt dangerous.
Beautiful.
Violent.
Unavoidable.
Then his eyes landed on me.
Everything inside me tightened.
It made no sense.
I didn’t know him.
But the second our eyes met, something strange moved through my chest.
A pull.
Sharp enough to steal my breath for half a second.
His expression changed instantly.
Not softer.
Not warmer.
Just… focused.
Like every other person around us had disappeared.
The air suddenly felt too thick.
Too hot.
Too close.
What the hell?
A guy bumped into my shoulder while passing and muttered, “Sorry,” before hurrying away.
But Kael didn’t look away.
Neither did I.
Bad decision.
Because a second later, he started walking toward me.
Slowly.
Every step controlled.
Predatory.
I should have looked away.
Instead, I stood there like an i***t while my pulse began climbing higher and higher.
Girls nearby straightened subtly as he passed.
One even smiled at him.
He ignored all of them.
His eyes stayed on me.
Only me.
And for some reason, that realization sent heat curling low in my stomach.
By the time he stopped in front of me, I had to tilt my head slightly to maintain eye contact.
He was close enough for me to notice details now.
The scar near his mouth.
The faint scent of cedar and smoke.
The tension in his jaw.
And his eyes—
God.
There was something deeply unsettling about them.
Like he was restraining something violent behind them.
His gaze dragged slowly over my face.
Then lower.
My throat.
My mouth.
My body reacted instantly.
A sharp pulse of awareness hit me so suddenly I almost hated him for it.
He leaned slightly closer.
Not enough to touch.
Enough to make me feel trapped anyway.
“Who are you?” he asked quietly.
Not curious.
Demanding.
I blinked once.
“That’s usually something people say after introducing themselves.”
A few nearby students looked horrified.
Like I’d just made a terrible mistake.
But Kael only stared at me.
Then something flickered in his expression.
Interest.
Dangerous interest.
“You’re new,” he said.
“I figured the suitcase gave that away.”
One corner of his mouth almost moved.
Not quite a smile.
Worse somehow.
His eyes darkened slightly.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
I let out a short laugh.
“Wow. You people really know how to welcome someone.”
“I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
The tension between us thickened.
And suddenly I became very aware that people were watching.
Not casually either.
Nervously.
Like they expected something to happen.
Kael stepped even closer.
Close enough that I could feel warmth radiating from him now.
“Listen carefully, Amara Cole.”
My stomach dropped.
I never told him my name.
“You need to stay away from me.”
Every instinct inside me should’ve screamed yes.
Instead, my body betrayed me completely.
Because all I could think about was how close his mouth was.
How deep his voice sounded this near.
How badly I wanted to know why looking at him felt like standing too close to fire.
I folded my arms slowly.
“And if I don’t?”
Silence.
Heavy.
His jaw tightened hard enough for me to notice.
Then his eyes flashed downward briefly.
Not metaphorically.
Actually flashed.
A sharp silver glow burned through them for less than a second.
I froze.
What—
Before I could process it, his hand suddenly slammed against the wall beside my head.
Gasps broke out around us.
My breath caught instantly.
He’d moved so fast I hadn’t even seen it happen.
Now he was leaning over me slightly, caging me between his body and the stone wall.
Close.
Way too close.
My heartbeat became uneven.
Kael lowered his head near my ear.
And when he spoke, his voice sounded rougher than before.
Less controlled.
“You don’t understand what you do to this place.”
Heat flooded my skin.
I swallowed hard.
“What does that even mean?”
His fingers flexed against the wall beside me.
Like he was fighting himself.
Then slowly—
Painfully slowly—
he inhaled near my neck.
The reaction was instant.
His entire body went rigid.
A dark sound rumbled low in his chest.
Not human.
My pulse exploded.
His eyes lifted to mine again, silver flickering beneath the darkness.
Obsession.
Shock.
Hunger.
Every terrifying emotion burned openly across his face for one dangerous second before he forced it away.
Then he pushed himself back from the wall abruptly.
Like touching me any longer was a mistake.
Or temptation.
Students immediately pretended not to stare.
Kael kept his eyes locked on me.
“You need to leave this campus,” he said quietly.
I tried to steady my breathing.
“And if I don’t?”
This time, when he answered, his voice came out colder.
Possessive.
Terrifying.
“Then I’ll destroy anyone who touches you.”
And before I could respond—
He walked away.
Leaving me standing there breathless while every student around me stared at me like I had just survived something impossible.
