Prologue: The beginning, the end
"Hey, A?"
As if coming out of a trance, Aaron looks up from the book she's reading, to the face of her best friend and housemate as he stands at her door. She could hear the rain outside.
"Hey, Jacob. What is it?"
"We're done with the prototype for the game, can you come check it out?"
Aaron loved playing all sorts of games; video games, phone games, virtual reality games, you name it. And because she had such exposure and experience with video games, the boys needed her opinion.
"Sure." She folds the top of the page she was reading and puts the book under her pillow.
Aaron had never felt useful, but the fact that she could help her friends with this made her feel really good.
She follows him to their work room. There were wires and computers and CPUs all in a mess. But it was a familiar mess, so she doesn't even bat an eyelid and waves at Isaac and Ron who sat in a corner of the room, waiting for her. She walks straight to the computer with the new game, takes her seat and starts it up. She watches as the name comes up eerily with haunting music.
"ooooh nice. Prophecy of the blood moon"
Just then, lightening and thunder raced through the sky.
Everyone in the room flinched. "Damn, talk about creepy"
Aaron smiles and picks up the game console.
"So what's it about?"
Just then, a lightening zapped through the sky, and as if connected, the game console electrifies her.
She drops it immediately, "s**t! What the f**k?"
Jacob immediately movies to her side. "what happened? You good?"
"That s**t shocks is what. Damn"
Jacob looks at her with concern. "I'm so sorry, it must be because of the rain. Plus, we haven't really perfected it cos we don't want to waste resources if it turns out to suck." He looks on at her apologetically.
She sighs. "Fine. But you're really gonna have to pay me this time."
Jacob smiles "of course. Definitely "
"Stop smiling, I know you're lying". Aaron replies, starting to smile.
"What? No. Lying? Nooo"
But he was smiling. Yeah, this mf wasn't paying her jack.
Aaron picks up the console tentatively, to check if she could still feel the electric shock, and is satisfied to feel nothing.
She holds it comfortably in her hands and sits up to face the screen very well.
This arrangement between them was so that they could get a real user's rating. Aaron wasn't at all involved in the making of the game, not even at the idea stage, so it was easier to get an objective opinion.
She starts the game up again and as she does, she feels the console slowly getting hotter. It wasn't too bad, so she decides to ignore it. She reads what's is on the screen which was being read out by an old, male storyteller's voice.
"A time will come, when a series of four consecutive lunar eclipses with six full moons in between shall occur, and this shall be the beginning of the end. On the first lunar eclipse, a demon craving the blood of humans shall awaken. There will be deaths and loss, sadness and agony; these shall be the signs of his arrival. On the last day of the lunar eclipse, the moon shall turn red, and the demon will gain utmost power with which it shall destroy life itself. A hero shall rise from among the multitude and be humanity's last hope. He shall lead the people to victory, against darkness. The fate of this hero shall lie on his own destiny"
"Woah. This is amazing!"
Aaron was so transfixed by what she was reading, she barely noticed that the console was even hotter.
And right on time, lightening and thunder furiously rage in the sky. Just then she feels very sharp pains on both her thumbs, and then...
Darkness.
