1.A marriage she never asked for.
Rain drummed relentlessly against the café windows, blurring the city beyond into a haze of lights and shadows. Every now and then, a distant rumble of thunder rolled across the sky, shaking the silence that lingered between conversations.
Nestled near the university, the small café offered warmth from the storm outside. The rich aroma of coffee filled the air, yet even its comforting scent failed to ease the turmoil clouding Pearl Devereux's mind.
Seated by the window, Pearl stared blankly into her untouched cup of coffee. Her slender fingers circled the rim absentmindedly as she stirred the dark liquid, watching the ripples disappear almost as quickly as they formed.
A soft sigh escaped her lips.
Across from her sat Liyana Valcrest, her closest friend and the only person who truly understood her.
For years, Liyana had stood beside her through every disaster, every rebellion, and every ridiculous scheme they had devised together. If Pearl trusted anyone in this world, it was her.
Noticing the unusual gloom on Pearl's face, Liyana set down her cup and leaned forward.
"What happened?" she asked, studying her carefully. "You look like someone just informed you the world is ending."
Pearl let out a bitter laugh.
"At this point, it might as well be."
Liyana immediately straightened.
That response alone was enough to tell her something serious had happened.
After a moment of hesitation, Pearl finally spoke.
"My family arranged another marriage."
Liyana blinked.
Pearl continued with obvious frustration.
"And this time they didn't even have the courtesy to tell me who the groom is."
For several seconds, silence hung between them.
Then Liyana burst into laughter.
Loudly.
Several customers turned to look.
Pearl stared at her in disbelief.
"Liyana."
The warning in her voice did nothing to stop her.
"Sorry," Liyana managed between laughs. "I'm trying very hard to be sympathetic."
"You are failing miserably."
That only made Liyana laugh harder.
Eventually, she composed herself and waved a hand dismissively.
"Why are you stressing over something so minor?"
Pearl nearly dropped her spoon.
"Minor?"
"Of course."
Liyana shrugged.
"We'll just ruin this engagement too."
Pearl closed her eyes.
There it was.
The exact response she had expected.
"Liyana," she said patiently, "do you remember what happened the last time?"
The smile slowly vanished from Liyana's face.
Unfortunately, she remembered perfectly.
The fake scandal.
The forged photographs.
The furious family meeting.
And the very real possibility of both of them getting caught.
"We almost exposed ourselves."
Pearl rubbed her forehead.
"If my family ever discovers that every failed proposal over the past three years was my doing, they'll lock me in the house until I'm married."
Liyana winced.
When Pearl put it that way, the situation sounded considerably worse.
Crossing her arms, she narrowed her eyes.
"So what are you saying?"
Pearl looked down at her coffee.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely exhausted.
Not angry.
Not rebellious.
Just tired.
Tired of arguing.
Tired of running.
Tired of fighting a battle she knew she could never truly win.
After a long silence, she finally lifted her gaze.
"What if I stop resisting?"
Liyana froze.
The words struck harder than Pearl probably realized.
"What?"
Pearl forced a faint smile.
"What other option do I have?"
"No."
Liyana shook her head immediately.
"Absolutely not."
A hint of determination returned to her eyes.
"You can't just give up your entire future because your family decided it's time."
Pearl looked away.
Rain trickled down the glass beside her.
"If he turns out to be a decent person..." she began quietly, "...then maybe marrying him won't be the worst thing in the world."
The words sounded hollow even to her own ears.
Liyana stared at her.
For the first time since they'd met, Pearl sounded uncertain about her own future.
That frightened her more than anything else.
"Pearl..."
Pearl interrupted her with a small smile.
"Don't look at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like I'm walking toward my execution."
Liyana's silence was answer enough.
Pearl laughed softly.
A sad laugh.
Then she leaned forward.
"But I do need your help."
Immediately suspicious, Liyana narrowed her eyes.
"What kind of help?"
Pearl glanced around before lowering her voice.
"I want everything."
"What?"
"Everything."
Liyana blinked.
Pearl's expression became serious.
"I want his educational background. His family history. His friends. His business connections. His personality."
She paused.
Then added,
"And if he's ever dated anyone before, I want to know that too."
A slow grin spread across Liyana's face.
Now this was a mission she could get behind.
"You want a full investigation."
"I want enough information to decide whether marrying him would be a mistake."
Liyana reached for her coffee and smirked.
"Leave it to me."
Pearl raised an eyebrow.
"That confident?"
Liyana tossed her hair over one shoulder dramatically.
"When have I ever disappointed you?"
Pearl immediately answered.
"Do you want the list alphabetically or chronologically?"
Liyana gasped in offense.
Pearl laughed for the first time that afternoon.
And for a brief moment, despite the storm raging outside and the uncertainty looming ahead, everything felt a little lighter.
Neither of them realized that the man who would soon turn Pearl's carefully ordered world upside down had already begun moving toward her life.
And once their paths crossed—
There would be no turning back.
For several minutes, Pearl remained seated alone at the table, her attention fixed on the profile displayed on the tablet screen.
Victor Armonte.
The name lingered in her thoughts.
She scrolled through the information once again, studying every detail as though doing so might somehow help her understand the stranger her family had chosen for her future.
Yet the more she read, the more conflicted she felt.
With a soft sigh, she finally picked up her bag and rose from her seat.
The rain outside showed no sign of stopping.
Still engrossed in the information on the screen, Pearl pushed open the café door and stepped out into the cool afternoon air.
The moment she did—
Thud.
She collided with someone.
The impact caught her completely off guard.
The tablet slipped from her grasp, and her body instinctively stumbled backward.
"I'm so sor—"
The apology died in her throat.
Pearl froze.
Standing before her was a man.
For a brief second, the world seemed to stand still.
Rain cascaded behind him like a silver curtain, while dark clouds loomed overhead, casting shadows across the city.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored black coat, the man looked as though he had stepped straight out of a scene from a movie.
His features were strikingly handsome, sharp enough to appear almost unreal. Dark hair framed a face sculpted with effortless perfection, while a pair of calm, unreadable eyes regarded her with quiet intensity.
There was something dangerous about him.
Not obvious.
Not threatening.
But undeniable.
The kind of danger hidden beneath elegance and composure.
Pearl found herself momentarily unable to look away.
The sudden collision sent the tablet flying from her hands.
A startled gasp escaped her lips as her balance gave way.
For a split second, she braced herself for the painful impact of concrete.
It never came.
A strong arm wrapped around her waist.
Firm.
Steady.
Unyielding.
The man caught her effortlessly before she could fall.
Pearl's breath hitched.
The warmth of his hand seeped through the fabric of her coat, sending an unfamiliar jolt through her entire body.
Everything around her seemed to fade.
The sound of rain.
The distant traffic.
Even the thunder rolling across the sky.
All of it disappeared.
Leaving only the strange awareness of the man holding her.
For one suspended moment, neither moved.
Neither spoke.
Pearl could hear her own heartbeat pounding wildly in her chest.
Slowly, she lifted her gaze.
And found him already looking at her.
Those dark eyes were calm and inscrutable, yet there was something unsettling in their depth.
As though he could see far more than he should.
As though he were memorizing her face.
The realization sent an inexplicable shiver down her spine.
His grip remained secure around her waist, steadying her until she regained her balance.
Only then did Pearl become painfully aware of how close they were standing.
Far too close.
Heat immediately rushed to her cheeks.
The man seemed to notice.
One perfectly arched brow lifted slightly.
A faint trace of amusement flickered through his eyes.
Not enough to be called a smile.
Yet somehow, it made him even more dangerous.
And infinitely more attractive.
The realization only worsened her embarrassment.
Finally, he released her.
His deep voice broke the silence.
"Are you alright?"
The simple question sounded strangely intimate coming from him.
Pearl blinked, forcing herself back to reality.
"Y-Yes."
Her voice came out softer than intended.
She cleared her throat.
"I'm fine."
For some reason, she wasn't entirely convinced.
Because the moment she had looked into those dark eyes—
Something inside her had shifted.
And she had the unsettling feeling that this unexpected encounter was only the beginning.
