LIFE IS ROSY ISN’T IT AVERY?

1550 Words
‘How would you advice a young adult to behave when going to see her father who she hasn’t seen in almost a year?’ ‘Haha, kidding. I know exactly how to act’. Quickly loosening my hair from it’s cornrows, I ran a comb through it and packed it upwards, leaving tendrils to frame my face. Then I applied lipgloss and smacked my lips together, looking at myself in the mirror. One thing that runs in my family is good genes, we’re actually good looking and I take pride for being a beautiful girl. My caramel skin is spotless and flawless, with a beauty spot underneath my lower lip, towards the right corner. If someone looks closely they might actually see light freckles dusted on my face, but I never let anyone get that close to me. I love my personal space so much. “Alright, I’m done here. Phone, charger, wallet, keys, earphones, lip gloss, all check”. I mentally checked before leaving, it’s a very typical thing for me to always forget something. “Mom I’m leaving”. I called out to my mother. “Wait young lady”. I heard her voice stop me before I could open the front door. “Oh no”. “You haven’t seen your father in almost a year are you sure you want to do this?” I looked at her face and saw concern written all over it, she seemed like she was keeping something from me but don’t know how to break it to me. “Is he dead?” “God, no Emma! Why would you think such a thing”. “I don’t know”, I shrugged at her. “Maybe because of the way you’re fidgety and you seem like you don’t want me to go. Like it’s a bad idea to go”. “No no no, I absolutely don’t mean it that way sweetie. I just want you to be fine, the stress of driving there twice a day today and you have school to prepare for. Then leaving for school, the stress load will be too much sweetie”. “Mom”, I held her face with my both hands. “I’ll be fine. Just a quick drive over and back, don’t worry about me”. “Okay sweetie, be careful”. “I will”, I gave her a quick kiss on her cheeks and left the house to my car. My phone rang just as I got to my car and opened the door, Maya was calling again. “Hey girl”. “What’s up”. “I’m good, hol up, let me connect to my car’s Bluetooth please”. “Okay”. I put on the car’s ignition and connected to the Bluetooth. “So what’s up? Are you tired already of shopping?” Maya sighed, I laughed. Shopping with Maya’s mom is the biggest sport ever. “She wants to go through every single shop in this mall! Right now as I’m talking to you, she’s in Victoria secrets”, Maya reduced her voice as she said the last line to a conspiratorial whisper. I gasped, faking surprise but not really surprised because we both knew that it’s something her mother could do quite alright. “You don’t mean it”, I responded playing along to the script, while I drove out of my driveway into the street. “I wish I don’t. Where are you off to?” “Uh, my dad’s place”. “Shut up, you don’t say”. I laughed, “I’m going there love”. “What, he like asked you to come over or what?” “He’s been asking me to come over since girl”. “I know, maybe this time it’s different?” “Actually I’m going there on my own now”. “Oh wow, what changed”. “I don’t know, I just want to go over to say hi and get some money for school”. “Okay, I get it.. oh no”, Maya suddenly said. “What’s wrong?” “Mom, she just came out of the store. I’ll talk to you later Emma, drive safe”. She hurriedly said and hung up, I did not even reply her before she hung up. Maya and her mom, I chuckled and put on some music, increasing the speed of my car, I sped off reducing the distance between my father and I with acceleration. ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** Shock is an understatement to how I’m sure my dad was feeling right now. We’ve been standing and staring at each other for some time now, ever since I got down from my car. “You’re just staring at me dad. It’s rude, won’t you give your baby girl a hug?” That brought him out of his zone space, he left his girlfriend’s hand and walked over to where I was relaxing on my car to give me a hug, which I returned of course. “Why didn’t you call to inform us that you were on your way here?” Avery my father’s girlfriend asked, I wasn’t pleased with the question in any way. “Oh I’m sorry, I never knew I have to take permission before I could come to my father’s house now, Avery”, adding her name with every ounce of sweet venom I could mutter. “But I’m here now, you want me to drive two hours back and call you for permission to come over?” “There’s no need for all that Emmanuella”, my father called my name in full. “I’m sure she didn’t mean it that way”. “You can’t be so sure”. I gave Avery a look from her head to toes, noticing only then that she had on loose flowing gown. Not only that, I noticed she had a bump, Avery was pregnant?! “Honey”, my father’s voice brought me back to reality. “Hmm”. “We’re headed out for some neighborhood thing, if you’re interested to join..” “Nope”, I quickly interrupted. “I came here to talk about school with you and to go back”. “Oh”. ‘Hold up, was that disappointment I heard in my father’s voice?’ “Yes, I’m supposed to leave for school in two days time”. “Well, I’m going to be busy till evening today and that’s not enough time and I can’t most definitely let you drive back late at night”. “That’s fine, I want to pass the night here”. Then I gave Avery a sweet smile. ‘Girl you’re in for a night tonight’. “You’re sure?” “I’ll check in with mom and let her know, but it’s okay if I stay over right?” “Sure honey, you know..” “I wasn’t asking you dad, I was checking in with Avery”. I cut my dad off, yet again. “It’s fine”, Avery unconsciously rubbed her stomach and I caught the action, but pretended that I didn’t. “Okay that’s cool, keys?” I stretched my hands out towards my dad who placed the house keys in my palm. “Please I’ll need you guys to stop at the mall and get me fresh underwear with a night wear”. “I have some new stuff you could borrow”, Avery offered, but I’m trying to be a petty girl here please. “No thank you, I want new set for myself”. “Sure, if that’s what you want”, my dad said while Avery shrugged. I smiled, “life is rosy isn’t it Avery”. Without waiting for a response, I skipped my way to the front door. “Have fun adults, don’t stay out too late else I’ll lock you both out”. With that I waved them both bye, opened the door and entered the house, shutting the door behind me firmly. Third person’s POV “You don’t think she noticed the bump?” Avery asked her fiancé as he opened the car door and she stepped inside. She waited for him to go round and enter the car, while she buckled her seatbelt. “Why do you think so? The bump is barely noticeable yet”. “I have a feeling she knows”, Avery concluded and looked out the window. “And I think she doesn’t”. “Why was she acting crazy”. Allen sighed, “look she wasn’t acting crazy okay? That’s just who she is, you’ve only met with her from a distance. You’ve never really been close to her to know how she talks. Sarcasm is her nature”. “Well, I don’t like it”. “You don’t have to”. He ended the conversation as he drove out.
