The drive back from the grand ballroom to the main wing of the Black Pack mansion was dead silent. Carl kept his hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel of his luxury SUV, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his neck jumped. The suffocating aroma of dark cedar and ozone still hung heavily in the enclosed space, a constant reminder of Alpha Caine’s territorial marking. Carl’s wolf was highly agitated, pacing beneath his skin, furious that his father had terrified the person he cared about most.
I sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly out the window as the dark pine trees blurred past. My soul felt fractured. Every time Carl threw me a worried, protective glance, a fresh wave of sick guilt washed over my stomach. He thought he was protecting me from a ruthless pack ruler. He had no idea he was harboring the very girl who had begged his father to ruin her on a mahogany desk less than an hour ago.
The moment the SUV clicked into park in the estate’s private garage, Carl slammed his hand against the steering wheel. "I can't just let this go, Maddy," he snapped, his voice deep and rough with an uncharacteristic edge. "He crossed a line tonight."
"Carl, please, just drop it," I pleaded, my voice trembling as I grabbed his arm. "Your dad is the Alpha. He was just doing his job. He was worried about the borders—"
"I don't care about the damn borders!" Carl yelled, turning to face me. His eyes were wide, flashing with a sudden, raw intensity that caught me completely off guard. "He treats everyone in this pack like a soldier or a chess piece, but you aren't one of his warriors, Maddy. You're... you're everything to me. I'm not going to let him intimidate you into hiding in the shadows."
Before I could stop him, Carl pushed his door open and marched toward the grand elevator that led straight to the penthouse level—the Alpha’s private quarters. Panic seized my throat. If Carl confronted Caine while his father was still running hot from our encounter, the truth could explode right in our faces. I threw my emerald dress's skirt over my arm and ran after him, my heels clicking frantically against the concrete.
"Carl, stop! Don't do this!" I begged as the elevator doors slid open on the top floor.
It was too late. Carl stormed down the heavily carpeted hallway, throwing open the double doors to Caine’s private lounge without knocking.
The room was vast, dark, and thick with luxury. Alpha Caine was already there. He had discarded his tuxedo vest and rolled the sleeves of his black shirt up his thick, forearms, exposing the dark hair and powerful veins underneath. He was pouring a glass of dark liquor, completely unbothered by the intrusion. He didn't even turn around when the doors slammed against the wall.
"You have exactly three seconds to explain why you are shouting in my home, Carl," Caine murmured, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that instantly made my inner wolf want to drop to its knees.
"You crossed the line tonight, Dad," Carl barked, stepping right into the center of the room, positioning his body slightly in front of mine in a protective stance. "Madison told me what happened in the eastern wing. You used your Alpha aura to terrify her. You cornered her over Killian Vance like she did something wrong!"
Caine turned slowly. His liquid-gold eyes didn't look at his son. Instead, his burning, predatory gaze cut right past Carl's shoulder, locking onto me. A slow, wicked gleam danced in his eyes as he saw how flushed and panicked I was. He took a slow sip of his drink, thoroughly enjoying the chaos.
"I am the Alpha of this pack, Carl," Caine said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "If I choose to remind a young female of her place and her responsibilities to our territory, I do not answer to my heir."
"She isn't just some random female in the pack!" Carl roared, his chest heaving as his internal wolf began to push forward, challenging his father's authority. The air in the room grew heavy, a dangerous clash of two dominant bloodlines filling the space. "You don't get to treat her like a stray. I've stayed quiet for years, Dad. I've let you dictate my training, my future, and my responsibilities. But I won't let you dictate her."
Caine set his glass down with a heavy, deliberate thud. He took two slow steps forward, his massive frame towering over his son. The raw pressure of his Apex dominance slammed into the room, making it hard to breathe. "And why is that, Carl? Why does Madison Summers warrant a challenge to your Alpha?"
Carl threw his shoulders back, his eyes flashing a volatile silver as he let out the breath he had been holding for years.
"Because I love her!" Carl shouted, the confession echoing violently off the high ceilings.
The words felt like a physical blow to my chest. I gasped softly, backing up against the wall as my hands flew to my mouth.
"I've loved her since we were kids," Carl continued, his voice shaking with the raw weight of his feelings. He didn't look back at me, his focus entirely locked on his father. "I was waiting until after the border summits to tell her. I was waiting until I was officially named heir so I could claim her as my mate. She is going to be my Luna, Dad. She belongs by my side. So if you ever use your power to scare her or put your hands near her again, I don't care if you're my father or my Alpha—I will fight you for her."
The silence that followed was deafening.
My heart was beating so hard I was certain it was going to burst. I looked at Carl, his face full of a beautiful, tragic sincerity, completely blind to the trap he had just walked into. Then, slowly, my eyes flicked to Caine.
The Alpha hadn't flinched. If anything, a dark, incredibly dangerous smile began to curl the edges of his lips. His gold eyes flared with a lethal, possessive jealousy that made the hair on my arms stand up. Hearing his own son claim Madison didn't scare him—it unleashed the monster.
Caine took one final step, closing the distance until he was looking down into his son's face, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet whisper that sent chills straight to my core.
"Your Luna?" Caine purred, his eyes shifting back to me, pinning me to the wall with a look that promised absolute ruin. He let his scent flare one more time, heavy and suffocatingly dominant, forcing me to swallow hard. "You are young, Carl. You think you can claim whatever catches your eye. But you know nothing about what Madison truly wants... or who she already belongs to."
