Chapter 1
The Black Estate always smelled of cedar, rain, and pure, suffocating power.
"I'm telling you, Maddy, my dad is going to lose his mind if the northern pack tries to cross the border again," Carl said, tossing a silver-trimmed football into the air and catching it lazily. He was sprawled on the Italian leather sofa in the estate's massive library, completely at ease. He was my best friend, my anchor in a pack where power meant everything. He was also completely oblivious.
He had no idea that my heart was currently hammering against my ribs like a trapped animal. He couldn’t hear it, but he could.
The heavy oak doors clicked open. The air in the room instantly grew thick, heavy with the scent of dark amber and ozone. Alpha Caine Black stepped inside. He didn't just occupy space; he commanded it. He was older, broader than Carl, with eyes like liquid gold that cut straight through the shadows.
"Carl," Caine’s voice rumbled, a deep baritone that vibrated straight down my spine, making my inner wolf whimper in instant submission. "The Beta is waiting for you in the training yard. Go."
"Right. Don't leave yet, Maddy, I'll be right back," Carl said, flashing me a grin before jogging out, leaving the doors to swing shut.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Caine didn't move for a long moment. Then, with the terrifying, silent grace of a predator, he closed the distance between us. I was backed against the mahogany bookshelves before I could even draw a breath. He towered over me, his scent completely clouding my mind, drowning out my rationality. I should never crave my best friend's Alpha father—he was older, impossibly dominant, and the forbidden obsession of my wettest dreams.
But as his large, calloused hand cupped my jaw, his thumb roughly tracing my lower lip, the fantasy became terrifyingly real.
"You're trembling, little wolf," Caine murmured, his eyes darkening as he felt the frantic pulse in my throat.
I was terrified, caught in the grip of a man who could destroy my entire life with a single pack command, yet I was absolutely desperate to let him ruin me.
Caine’s thumb applied just enough pressure to part my lips, his golden eyes tracking the hitch in my breath. "You look so beautiful when you're terrified of me, Madison," he growled softly, his chest pressing closer until I could feel the blistering heat of his body.
My hands hovered over his broad chest, wanting to push away, wanting to pull him closer. I was a second away from begging him to take me right there against the mahogany wood when the heavy oak doors groaned open.
"Hey, Dad, the Beta said—" Carl’s voice echoed into the room.
In a fraction of a second, Caine stepped back, his expression smoothing into a mask of cold, unbothered Alpha authority. He didn't look rushed. He looked like a king who had merely been correcting a subject.
I dropped my head, my face burning, my lower lip still tingling and wet from his thumb.
"I'll handle it, Carl," Caine said calmly, walking past his son without a backward glance.
Carl blinked, looking at his dad, then at me. "Maddy? You okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I'm fine," I choked out, wrapping my arms around myself to hide the fact that I was shivering. "Just... tired."
But as I looked out the window, watching Caine's massive silhouette cross the courtyard, I knew truth. I wasn't tired. I was unraveling.
