The annual Black Pack Gala was a display of obscene wealth and apex power. The grand ballroom of the estate was draped in black velvet and crystal chandeliers, filled with hundreds of high-ranking wolves in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns.
I stood near the champagne fountain, wearing a silk emerald-green dress that clung to every curve. It had an open back, leaving my skin completely bare to the cool draft of the room—and to the predatory glances I could feel burning into me from across the floor.
"You're not drinking," Carl said, stepping up beside me in a sharp black suit. He nudged my shoulder playfully, completely blind to the agonizing tension humming through my nerve endings. "Come on, Maddy. Relax a little. We're celebrating the quarter's trade margins."
"I am relaxing," I lied, forcing a smile as I held my champagne flute.
But my wolf knew better. My wolf was tracking a scent. Cedar. Rain. Pure, unadulterated dominance.
A shadow fell over us, and the wolves standing nearby instinctively parted, bowing their heads. Alpha Caine Black had arrived. He looked devastatingly handsome in a custom charcoal tuxedo. His silver-flecked hair was combed back, but his liquid-gold eyes were entirely wild, locking onto me the moment he drew near.
"Carl," Caine murmured, his deep voice sending an involuntary shiver straight down my exposed spine. "The elders from the northern territory are near the balcony. Go pay your respects on behalf of the family."
Carl sighed but nodded. "Sure thing, Dad. Maddy, don't disappear on me."
As Carl walked away, the air between Caine and me grew thick enough to choke on. The crowd buzzed around us, classical music swelling, but to my senses, the room was dead silent.
Caine took a slow step closer. He didn't touch me—not yet. Instead, he let his scent wash over me, a deliberate, intoxicating wave of Alpha authority that made my thighs ache with a sudden, heavy warmth.
"Emerald looks dangerous on you, little wolf," Caine purred, his voice a low, raspy vibration meant only for my ears. He stood close enough that the fabric of his trousers brushed against the silk of my gown. "It makes your skin look like cream. It makes me want to see how easily it tears."
My breath hitched. I swallowed hard, gripping the stem of my glass. "Alpha... please. Carl is right over there. Anyone could look."
"Let them look," he whispered, though his eyes flared with a dark, possessive jealousy. He took another step, trapping me between his massive frame and the marble high-top table.
Slowly, deliberately, his large hand slipped behind my back.
I gasped softly as his warm, calloused palm made direct contact with the bare skin of my spine. He didn't grip me roughly. Instead, he began a slow, agonizingly light torture. His fingertips traced the line of my vertebrae, moving down, down, until they rested right at the small of my back, just beneath the low dip of the silk fabric.
"You're so tense, Madison," he murmured, his face dipping low, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. His hot breath sent a violent jolt of electricity straight to my core. "Are you afraid of what I'll do to you? Or are you afraid of how much you want it?"
"Both," I whimpered, the honesty slipping out before I could stop it. My knees felt weak. If he weren't holding the small of my back, anchoring me to his heat, I might have collapsed.
His thumb stroked the soft skin above my hip, a slow, circular motion that was maddeningly seductive. It was a promise. A slow-burning fuse. He was testing my limits, pushing me to the absolute edge of propriety in a room full of people.
"Good," Caine whispered, his grip tightening just enough to pull my hips a fraction of an inch against his. The hard, uncompromising line of his body pressed into mine, leaving no doubt about what I did to him. "Because when I finally get you behind closed doors, Madison... I am going to ruin you completely. And you are going to beg me for it."
Before I could breathe, before I could answer, Caine smoothly pulled his hand away. He stepped back just as Carl began walking back toward us, a dark, wicked smirk playing on the Alpha's lips as he watched me tremble, thoroughly tormented and utterly desperate for more.
Before I could even catch my breath from Caine's touch, Carl returned, but he wasn't alone. Walking beside him was a tall, heavily muscled wolf with sharp, calculating silver eyes and a smirk that made my skin crawl.
"Maddy, you remember Killian Vance?" Carl asked, gesturing to the man. "His father is the Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack. They're here finalizing the new territory borders."
Killian didn't look at Carl. His silver eyes swept down my emerald dress, lingering heavily on the exposed skin of my chest and hips. A dark, predatory smile spread across his face.
"I remember Madison," Killian purred, his voice smooth but laced with an aggressive, challenging undertone. He stepped closer, deliberately invading my personal space. The scent of bitter pine and iron rolled off him—the scent of a rival. "Though the last time I saw you, you were just a girl. You've grown into something... exquisite."
I froze. My inner wolf bared its teeth at the intrusion, but my eyes instinctively flicked past Killian’s shoulder.
Alpha Caine hadn't left. He was standing five feet away, talking to a pack elder. But the moment Killian stepped toward me, Caine’s entire posture shifted. His broad shoulders went completely rigid. The air in our corner of the ballroom plummeted in temperature.
"Thank you, Killian," I muttered, taking a small step back, my heart pounding for an entirely different reason now.
Killian noticed the movement and chuckled, taking it as a challenge. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the bare skin of my forearm as he grabbed a fresh glass of champagne from a passing waiter and offered it to me. "Don't be shy, Madison. A beautiful female like you shouldn't be standing in the shadows. Come walk the terrace with me. Let's see if we can find something we both like."
A low, vibrating sound echoed through the ballroom. It was so deep, so lethal, that the classical music seemed to stutter.
It wasn't a growl. It was the sound of an Apex predator marking his territory.
Killian stiffened, his fingers freezing on my arm. Carl blinked, looking around in confusion as the wolves nearest to us suddenly fell dead silent, their instincts telling them to flee.
Caine turned slowly. His liquid-gold eyes were gone, replaced by a pitch-black void of pure, unbridled fury. The sheer pressure of his Alpha aura slammed into the room, making it hard to breathe. He didn't look like a wealthy businessman in a tuxedo anymore; he looked like a god of war ready to tear a throat out.
"Killian," Caine rumbled, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with a terrifying, quiet violence. He walked over, his heavy steps echoing in the sudden silence. He didn't just step between us; he entirely eclipsed me with his massive frame, forcing Killian to take two hurried steps back.
"Alpha Black," Killian stammered, his arrogant smirk instantly vanishing as his posture bent in forced submission to a stronger Alpha. "I was just... greeting Madison."
"You are a guest in my home, Vance," Caine said, his voice terrifyingly calm, though the veins in his thick neck were pulsing. He leaned in slightly, his eyes burning into the younger wolf. "But if I see your hands near what belongs to the Black Pack again, I will send you back to your father in pieces. Do you understand me?"
Killian swallowed hard, bowing his head completely. "Yes, Alpha. My apologies." He offered a tense nod to Carl and practically sprinted toward the other side of the room.
"Whoa," Carl muttered, rubbing the back of his neck, completely misinterpreting the situation. "Dad, it's just Killian. He's always an i***t. You didn't have to go full Apex on him."
Caine didn't look at his son. His burning, possessive gaze slowly turned around to lock onto me. His chest was heaving slightly beneath his tuxedo, his scent completely overwhelming the room, demanding my absolute surrender.
"Carl," Caine ordered, his eyes never leaving my face. "Go find the Beta. Now."
"But—"
"Now, Carl."
Carl shrank back from the absolute authority in his father's voice, nodding quickly before disappearing into the crowd.
We were alone in the crowded room again. Caine stepped so close his chest practically pinned me against the wall. His fingers wrapped around my wrist—not softly this time, but with a bruising, dominant grip that made a gasp escape my lips. He pulled me flush against his hard body, his thumb digging into my pulse point.
"He touched your skin," Caine whispered, his voice a dark, feral growl against my ear. "He looked at you like he could have you."
"Caine... please," I whimpered, my body melting into his heat even as my heart raced with fear.
"My study. Ten minutes," Caine commanded, his grip tightening just enough to leave a phantom burn on my wrist before he let go. His eyes promised utter ruin. "If you aren't there waiting for me, Madison, I will drag you out of this ballroom in front of everyone. Move."
