Ten minutes.
It sounded like an eternity, but as I practically fled from the suffocating grandeur of the ballroom, the seconds felt like sand slipping too quickly through my fingers. My heart was a frantic, wild thing, hammering against my ribs with such violence that I was certain the high-ranking wolves I passed could hear it. I kept my head down, my gaze fixed on the polished marble floors, avoiding the curious eyes of the pack elders. The scent of ozone, bitter pine, and Caine’s terrifying, possessive aura still clung to my skin, heavy and thick enough to make my inner wolf whimper in a volatile mixture of fear and breathless anticipation.
I didn't stop until I reached the eastern wing of the Black Estate. Down here, the booming bass of the classical orchestra faded into a muted, distant hum. The air was cooler, smelling faintly of old paper, leather, and the heavy cedarwood that always signaled Alpha Caine’s personal sanctuary.
When I reached the towering double doors of his private study, my hand shook so violently I could barely grasp the heavy brass handle. I pushed the door open and stepped inside, the quiet of the room swallowing me whole.
The study was dark, illuminated only by the deep amber glow of a dying fire in the hearth. Massive floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, casting long, imposing shadows across the room. In the center sat his desk—a massive piece of solid, dark mahogany that looked more like a throne than an office fixture.
I leaned my back against the closed door, my chest heaving as I pulled a ragged breath into my lungs. My emerald silk dress felt impossibly tight, the cool air of the room biting at my bare, exposed back. I crossed my arms over my chest, trying to stop the shivering, but it wasn't from the cold. It was the waiting.
*Eight minutes left.*
Every tick of the antique grandfather clock in the corner felt like a drop of hot wax on my skin. Caine had given me an ultimatum: be here, or he would drag me out in front of the entire pack. He was a man who never made empty threats. If I had stayed downstairs, if I had tried to run to my own quarters, he would have hunted me down without a shred of hesitation. He was the Apex. His word was absolute law, and my body knew it, even if my rational mind was screaming at me that this was madness.
I walked over to the desk, my heels clicking softly against the Persian rug. I touched the smooth, cold surface of the wood, my mind flashing back to the library just days ago—the rough texture of his thumb on my lower lip, the predatory heat radiating from his massive frame. I should never crave him. He was Carl’s father. He was the man who had watched us grow up, the man who held the fate of thousands of wolves in his hands. He was supposed to be untouchable. A god in a tailored tuxedo.
But tomorrow, when the sun came up, I would still have to look Carl in the eyes. I would have to pretend that everything was normal, that I wasn't secretly unraveling from the inside out for the man who gave him life. The guilt was a heavy, suffocating weight in my throat, yet underneath it, a dark, shameful wave of desire washed through my core, leaving me aching and desperately wet beneath the silk of my gown.
*Four minutes left.*
The silence in the study grew heavier, pressing against my eardrums. I couldn't sit down. The sheer anxiety kept me pacing the perimeter of the room, my wolf pacing right along with me, her ears pinned back, waiting for her master to claim the space.
Then, I heard it.
Heavy, unhurried footsteps echoing down the long, carpeted hallway.
My entire body went rigid. The scent of rain and dark amber drifted through the cracks of the door before he even arrived, a sensory warning that the predator had reached his hunting ground.
The brass doorknob turned.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Alpha Caine Black stepped into the room. He didn't look at the fire, and he didn't look at his desk. His liquid-gold eyes locked instantly onto me, pinning me to the spot where I stood near the bookshelves. He closed the door behind him with a soft, deliberate click, and then, without breaking eye contact, his large hand reached back and turned the heavy deadbolt.
*Click.*
The sound was definitive. It was the sound of my trap snapping shut.
Caine didn't say a word at first. He slowly unbuttoned his custom tuxedo jacket, tossing it carelessly onto a nearby leather armchair. He loosened his silk tie, pulling it free from his collar, his thick throat shifting as he swallowed. The raw, physical power radiating off him was blinding. Without the formal restraints of his jacket, the sheer width of his shoulders and the hard, dense muscle of his chest were on full display beneath his black button-down shirt.
He took a slow step toward me, his movements fluid, silent, and terrifyingly graceful.
"You're on time, Madison," Caine murmured, his deep baritone vibrating through the quiet room, sending a violent jolt of electricity straight down my spine. "Good. I detest disobedience."
"Alpha," I whispered, my voice cracking under the weight of his presence. I backed up until the solid wood of the bookshelf pressed into my bare spine, trapping me. "Please... Carl is going to wonder where we went. We can't stay here long."
Caine stopped just inches away from me. He was so massive he completely blocked out the light from the fireplace, enveloping me in his shadow. The heat radiating from his body was blistering, a stark contrast to the cool draft of the room.
"Carl is drinking with the elders," Caine said, his voice dropping an octave, becoming a dark, feral rasp that made my knees feel dangerously weak. "He is oblivious. He doesn't see what is right in front of him. He doesn't see the way your scent changes when I walk into a room. He doesn't see how desperately you want me to do exactly what I'm about to do."
Before I could breathe, Caine closed the remaining distance. He didn't touch me gently. His large, heavy hand slammed against the bookshelf right next to my head, the wood groaning under the force. He leaned down, his face inches from mine, his gold eyes burning with a dark, terrifying possessiveness that made my breath hitch.
"Now," Caine whispered, his other hand rising slowly, his long, calloused fingers wrapping around the side of my neck, his thumb resting directly over my frantic, hammering pulse. "Show me exactly where that Crescent Moon stray touched you. Because I am going to erase his scent from your skin, Madison. Every single inch of it."
