Adopt a Werewolf Girl
My name is Ailina, the unfortunate werewolf heiress who was switched at birth. When my biological grandfather found me, I was fighting with a stray dog for food, my teeth tightly clenching its fur, refusing to let go until blood seeped out. My hands were not idle either, pounding fiercely on the dog's body, each punch striking deep into its flesh. The ferocity in my actions shocked the elderly man in front of me, as I was merely a frail little girl of werewolf lineage. He looked at me with a mix of pity and hesitation, not daring to approach. Then, his bodyguard delivered a forceful kick to the stray dog. The dog yelped in pain, releasing my arm with a whimper and staggered away. I hid my mangled right arm, bitten to a bloody pulp by the dog, behind my back and warily eyed the two older men.
As a werewolf descendant hidden within human society, I could sense a familiar scent from the old man in front of me. Could he be my real kin? My grandfather handed me a handkerchief and tried to force a kind smile at the corners of his mouth, "Child, where are your parents?" I shook my head, pretending to be a mute human child who couldn't understand anything.
The villagers knew I was an orphan. My father died while working far away, and my mother, unable to bear the loneliness, ran off with a man who drove a tractor, leaving five-year-old me alone in a dilapidated house with no proper door. If it weren't for the villagers fearing negative gossip if I starved to death, they wouldn't have begrudgingly provided me with some food every day. Otherwise, I might have perished in some abandoned baby ditch long ago.
The two men before me were well-dressed and seemed out of place in the village. They inquired about my parents, and my intuition told me they had ulterior motives towards me.
I glanced down at my dirty feet, not understanding what they wanted from me. However, my cold demeanor didn't deter them. The old man sighed and arranged for my adoption by offering to donate to the construction of two Hope Primary Schools. I was given the name Ailina, becoming the adopted daughter of the Lesley family, under the care of the old man's second son.
Grandfather Lesley had two sons and two daughters. Apart from his biological youngest son, who had a son named John the same age as me, the other adopted children had all married and raised daughters. Grandfather Lesley sent me away to be educated for two years, and it wasn't until I turned seven that I officially returned to the Lesley household. Coincidentally, the family was celebrating John's birthday and his advancement to a higher level of education.
Grandfather smiled, placing my hand in John's, and said earnestly, "Ailina is the best gift I have chosen for you. You must treat her well." I didn't say anything, carefully examining the curious, beautiful boy before me. He was half a head shorter than me, dressed in an exquisite champagne-colored suit. His face was delicate and refined, with long eyelashes like little fans. A small black mole on his lower jaw reminded me of my human mother. And his scent – surprisingly, that of a human boy!
I stared at John, lost in thought. Grandfather picked me up again and handed me over to John's werewolf parents. They were pure werewolves, their scent similar to mine and Grandfather Lesley's. I clung to John's mother's clothes, leaning in to catch her scent.
Grandfather Lesley looked at us kindly, telling them that I was the companion he had specially found for John, and that I would grow up and study together with him. John's father looked at me expressionlessly.
John's mother held me tightly in her arms, her eyes filled with tears, and asked both John and me to call her "mother." I was enchanted by her scent. Shyly, I called out, "Mother."
Hearing me call her "mother," John's mother cried even more, and John's father's eyes instantly reddened as well. Little John, not understanding the situation, looked at us in confusion. However, he soon grinned and clung to his father's pant leg.
He didn't understand why the focus of his birthday and advancement celebration had shifted to me.
I lived in the Lesley household for ten years, always feeling apologetic towards John. It wasn't until I accidentally discovered that I was the true blood of the Lesley family, and John was merely the child of my parents' driver and nanny. The young couple, blinded by greed, took advantage of my parents' trust in them and boldly orchestrated a child-swapping scheme in a society governed by law.
No one knew how they succeeded, but the fact was that John had become the most favored child in this top werewolf aristocratic family hidden within human society. As for me, I had been fighting for food with cats and dogs in the countryside to fill my stomach ever since I could remember.
I couldn't describe what went through my mind when I learned the truth. After all, I was already a high school senior by the time I discovered the truth.
At that time, John and I were together at the family-funded high school, preparing for our first major exam in life. John didn't like me. After the initial curiosity of our youth faded, he always felt that I had stolen his parents' attention and love.
He resented how the adults were strict in teaching him but treated me kindly. He hated how Grandfather would take me along on outings and visits with his old friends, showing favoritism. Among the third generation of the Lesley family, there were five or six children, and John had been the most cherished one.
But after I arrived, Grandfather and my parents seemed to pour all their love into me, as if trying to make up for lost time. John couldn't understand, and many others, including myself, couldn't either. As I received the affection of the Lesley family's adults, I felt humble and fearful.
I thought that John's parents and grandfather were kind to me because they hoped I could repay John better, loyally serve as his companion, and become his stepping stone when necessary. Because of this self-consistent speculation, I often withdrew myself from the warm love of the Lesley family's elders and coldly warned myself in my heart – everything in the Lesley family belonged to John, including my life.
John was my young master, the one I had to repay throughout my life. I, Ailina, would dedicate my life to repaying the kindness the Lesley family had shown me. For this reason, I was willing to endure all of John's actions towards me, including – causing me harm.
When we first entered middle school, the girls who liked John thought I, the adoptive daughter who shouldn't have existed, had ulterior motives for sticking to John every day. They stole my homework, cut up my dance practice skirt, ridiculed and isolated me within the team, and used these clumsy tricks to repeatedly affect my academic performance.
