The day she was born.
The rain would not stop. It fell against the hospital windows like tears the sky refused to hold. Inside, a young woman lay on a bed stained with blood that would not stop either. Her name was sophie. She was twenty-two years old.she was married to rico,And she was on death bed. The doctors moved fast but their faces told the truth. Postpartum hemorrhage. Too much blood lost. Too little time. In the corner of the room, a nurse held a crying newborn wrapped in a thin white blanket. The baby had her mother's dark hair and her father's restless eyes. But the father was not there. He was packing a suitcase three blocks away. When the phone rang, he let it ring. When it rang again, he turned it off. He had a plane to catch. A new life waiting in another country. Money to make. Dreams to chase. He told himself he would send for them later. His mother could raise the child for now. He would call when he landed. He would write when he had time. He never wrote. And Sophie never opened her eyes again. The last thing she heard before the darkness took her was the cry of her daughter. The first thing the daughter heard was silence. The grandmother arrived at the hospital an hour late. She held the baby in her trembling arms and looked at her daughter's cold face. She did not scream. She did not cry. She simply sat down on the plastic chair and rocked the child back and forth. "You have me," she whispered. "You will always have me." Outside, the rain finally stopped. But the man who should have been there was already thirty thousand feet above the clouds. He did not look back. He never did. The father was not there. Rico had left three days ago, after a fight with Sophie,he said he needed air. Then he said he needed space. Then he stopped saying anything at all.sophie has gone into labor alone, calling a taxi with shaking hands, and now she was dying alone too-except for the strangersin scrubs and the tiny, furious life she had just pushed into the world. A machine beeped a slow, falling rhythm.sophie's lips moved. The nurse with the baby leaned closer. Name her,the nurse whispered.Whats her name? Sophie's eyes fluttered open.she looked past the nurse, past the machine, toward the rain-streaked window.for a moment she almost smiled. "Inci,"she breathed because she came from something dark. The nurse pressed the baby closer to Sophie's chest,The newborn whimpered, then stilled as if she already understood that this warmth would not last.
