"S-Sweden? Europe?"
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I pinched both my cheeks, hoping this wasn’t a dream.
For the first time, I’d left the Mansion—not just left it, but gone to another country! How was that possible?
"Have I really left the Mansion?" I muttered to myself.
Rovano walked away from me, heading towards a glass door.
What on earth should I do now? How on earth am I supposed to escape and get back home when I’m already abroad like this?
This is mad, I can’t think straight. Should I run away from Rovano or should I just enjoy this free holiday? For a girl who’s been locked away her whole life like me, this is a huge opportunity.
At last I could see what the outside world was like.
“I’m not there anymore, so there are no high walls blocking my way.”
I stood up and followed Rovano. It turned out that behind the glass door was a fairly spacious balcony. My eyes couldn’t stop gazing in awe; the balcony looked straight out onto a beautiful beach.
I almost forgot that I was being held captive; a sense of happiness simply washed over me. Seeing the beach in person after a lifetime of only ever watching it on screen.
I still couldn’t believe I’d managed to make it here.
“Mr Morvane, is that the sea? Are we at the beach?” I asked Rovano.
Rovano paid me no mind at all; he just stared at me blankly, observing me. For some reason, I felt incredibly happy right now.
I jogged over to the edge of the balcony, gazing at the beach in awe. I actually jumped for joy, realising this wasn’t a dream. The tears that had been flowing had now stopped, replaced by my laughter.
Seeing the white sand of the beach made me want to walk there, but it was quite a distance away; I’d probably have to walk for a few minutes, and I couldn’t just step straight down from this balcony.
As soon as I turned around, Rovano was standing behind me, arms folded across his chest, staring at me with raised eyebrows in surprise.
I realised I’d been acting like a madwoman just now. A moment ago I’d been crying, wanting to go home, yet a second later I was overjoyed at seeing the beautiful beach for the first time.
I stood silent for a few moments, wondering what Rovano’s purpose was in bringing me to a place like this.
Slowly, I walked towards that cold man, who didn’t smile at me in the slightest.
It seemed Rovano was puzzled by my behaviour at that moment. But I couldn’t hide the happiness I’d felt earlier.
“Mr Morvane, why did you bring me here?” I asked him, looking at Rovano gently, though I still felt a little afraid.
Rovano didn’t answer; he just stared at me, his gaze becoming a little sharper.
“I want to thank you. All my life I’ve longed to leave that mansion; I want to see the real sea, the people, and the life that exists in this world. All this time I’ve been locked up there like a prisoner.”
I continued speaking to him, as it seemed he was waiting for it.
“You’ve never been out even once?” Rovano asked me, his face looking slightly intrigued by my story.
I nodded, then gave a small smile, “I spent my time inside the house, even school was at home; I only saw the outside world through the television screen and the internet. They say Dad took me out when I was four years old, but how could I possibly remember?”
It really is sad—how could a wealthy only child be locked away for her entire life in a mansion? I don’t understand it myself; they just say the outside world is cruel.
They were afraid I’d get hurt or something, but my life felt more like I was a prisoner.
The Ashford family tried to hide me well, though in the end a man like Rovano managed to take me away.
“Did you never try to get out?”
“I did, but before I even reached the gate, the servants and guards had already reported it, so I was dragged back into the mansion.”
I could see the man lower his head briefly; his lips moved but no sound was heard.
It turned out Rovano had just muttered something, but it was unclear; his voice wasn’t audible at all.
“In that case, can we walk to that stretch of beach?” I asked again, this time my eyes fixed on him with a gleam, hoping he’d show a little kindness and grant my request.
A moment later, I could see the look on Rovano’s face turn to sheer annoyance.
He pulled me back into the room, then threw me onto the bed with great force.
“Do you think I’m playing games with you?!”
