I woke up in a large bed, my eyes opening slowly. Where am I?
My body felt a little stiff, and my head was still a bit dizzy. This isn’t my room; my eyes opened fully and I began to look around.
As soon as I glanced to my right, my face froze. Rovano was asleep beside me; I panicked.
I pulled back the duvet to check my clothes; my heart nearly stopped, but a moment later I breathed a sigh of relief. I was still wearing the full dress from last night’s event.
Now all I had to do was get out of this room. I didn’t know where I was, but I had to leave before Rovano woke up.
As soon as I started to get up, Rovano grabbed my arm; he held it tightly and his eyes were wide open. The man stared at me intently, then pulled me back until I fell onto the bed again.
“Where are you going?” he asked in a cold voice.
"Let me go! I have to leave!"
Rovano didn’t let go; instead, he gripped my arm even tighter, and it hurt terribly.
"Be quiet."
Once again, his gaze was terrifying; he looked like a bloodthirsty man. My body began to tremble again, and fear surged around me once more.
"W-why... A-am I here with—w-with you?" I stammered, trying to ask despite my fear.
My eyes began to burn; tears were welling up in my eyelids. I’d been holding back these tears ever since I’d been in the mansion’s garden.
I never imagined I’d end up in the same room with a stranger whose proposal had been rejected by my father just yesterday.
“Calm down,” Rovano’s voice sounded very firm.
The man was still staring at me with a cold, piercing gaze; I tried to stay calm until finally I pleaded with him. I eventually grasped his strong hand.
“I w-want to go home… Mr Morvane, please take me back to the Mansion,” I begged him.
“No, you are my prey,” said Rovano, then he took my hand too.
I couldn’t stop crying; in fact, I was crying even harder. Rovano’s reply didn’t bring me the slightest comfort.
“Raven, remember? A raven never lets go of its prey.”
“You’re not a raven! You’re a human! I—I want to go home!”
I was terrified; this situation was just like a kidnapping film I’d once watched, and it ended badly. Now I was experiencing it myself... how on earth could I escape from here?
And where would I go once I’d managed to escape? No mobile phone, no servants, and this isn’t the Mansion!
I’ve never stepped outside the mansion gates. But at the very least, I have to try to escape from here, even though I have no idea what will become of me.
I quickly pulled my hand away and ran towards the nearest door, grabbing the handle. I tried to open it, but I couldn’t.
Please open, why must it be locked!
Rovano followed me; the man was right behind me now and I immediately turned to face him. My eyes met his in panic; I didn’t know where else to run to, and all I could do was press myself against the door as the man drew closer.
He pinned my body against the door; my eyes were shut tight, my breath coming in ragged gasps of fear. Rovano then grabbed the door handle, pressed it down, and pushed the door open.
The door swung wide open and I nearly fell backwards because my back was pressed against it; my eyes snapped open and Rovano just stared at me blankly whilst holding me up to stop me from falling.
"If you keep pulling it, this bathroom door will never open, no matter how long you try. You’re supposed to push it inwards to open it, Valerie..."
Embarrassing. So embarrassing.
Rovano’s hands, which had been on my back, now slid down to my hips and held me tightly.
We locked eyes again; I could feel my chest rising and falling rapidly as my breath was still coming in gasps. Fear, confusion and nervousness all mingled together.
First, I jogged from the bed to this door, yanking it brutally with all my might, trying to open it... but to no avail. I’d panicked so much I hadn’t even noticed which way the door opened.
Secondly, Rovano had scared the life out of me, then made me look like a complete fool for not being able to open the door.
Why did it have to be the bathroom door? Why wasn’t it the exit door I’d found? I hadn’t realised that the door clearly had to be pushed! How stupid of me!
My body slumped there; I sat limp on the floor, unable to support myself for the moment.
Rovano watched in silence.
“Please tell me where this is?” I asked softly. “I haven’t been out of the mansion for a long time, almost my whole life...”
“Sweden.”
