Chapter 3

425 Words
Gideon and I had been together for seven years, and he'd always put me above everything else in his life. Even his own parents had come second to me. I had a sensitive stomach and was incredibly picky about food, so he spent nearly two years learning my tastes and teaching himself how to cook. Even after he became a company director, the first thing he'd do after work was rush to the supermarket for groceries and make me dinner. Every time he came to pick me up, he'd have a bouquet of flowers in his hand. Sometimes it was a huge, vibrant bunch of red roses. Other times, it was a single, delicate eustoma. It all went back to something I'd casually said when he was pursuing me. "Giving flowers isn't that big of a deal. What's really impressive is keeping it up forever." To everyone who knew us, Gideon was the perfect husband. Until that moment, I'd thought so too. He'd hidden his true self so well that even my parents, who'd hated the thought of me marrying someone and moving so far from home, had made an exception for him. The tears on my cheeks had already dried. I knew better than ever that this man wasn't worth another tear. My finger hovered over their chat history. Rola: Gideon, thank you. If you hadn't come to save me, I probably would've been... Rain suddenly began lashing against the window, pounding hard against the glass. The day I'd gone to the hospital with a 104°F fever, it had been raining too. The doctor had just hooked me up to an IV when I got a call from Rola. The second I answered, I heard her hoarse, sniffling voice through the phone. She was whimpering that someone was following her. Gideon had been sitting beside my hospital bed, feeding me chicken soup. The moment he heard Rola crying, he jolted so hard that the bowl slipped from his hand, splattering soup across the floor. Before I could even ask what was wrong, the call abruptly cut off. He shot to his feet in a panic and bolted for the door. "Honey, I just remembered there's an emergency at work I have to deal with. I can't stay for the rest of your IV, okay?" He nearly tripped over himself in his rush to leave. I'd thought he was dealing with some complicated crisis at work. Turns out, he'd simply been in a hurry to play knight in shining armor for another woman.
