The day Gideon proposed to me, a video call from Rola popped up out of nowhere.
I'd just slipped the ring onto my finger, and I was bursting with excitement to share the news with her.
But the moment she saw the ring, her expression fell. She mumbled something about not feeling well and hung up right away.
Gideon stroked my hair, putting on the most wounded expression he could manage.
"Babe, can't you stop wasting your attention on people who don't matter?"
I was half amused, half exasperated.
"Are you seriously jealous of my best friend?"
Gideon acted like a spoiled brat, snatching my phone and tucking it out of reach.
"I don't care. I just want to cuddle with you in peace, without anyone interrupting us."
After that, my phone stayed silent.
His, however, started buzzing nonstop.
He shot me a guilty look, but I only smiled and waved it off.
"It's probably something important. You should check it."
One look at that message, and he was gone for three whole days.
He claimed there was an urgent work emergency he had to handle out of town.
But the chat logs on his phone told a completely different story.
Those three days, they'd watched the tide roll in and out together and kissed as the sun dipped below the horizon.
They'd spent their nights together on the waterbed, challenging dozens kinds of positions. And Gideon had even recorded videos to watch later.
Rola was panting with her lips brush against his. "Have you ever tried this position with her?"
Rain drummed softly against the window, blending with Rola's breathless moans.
I stared at the explicit descriptions of what they'd done, my eyes stinging as if a tiny needle was pricking them.
"Keep your voice down. You'll wake Nellie."
"You said she's been taking sleeping pills lately, right? She won't hear a thing."
I'd developed severe insomnia over the past six months. I couldn't even doze off without taking sleeping pills.
Over those same six months, Rola had started showing up at my door in the middle of the night, always claiming she'd had another fight with her boyfriend.
Sometimes I'd fall asleep early, only to wake up and find Rola curled up beside me.
I'd complained to Gideon about it a couple of times, but he'd only smiled and kissed my forehead.
"Rola's your best friend, isn't she? She's going through a tough time right now. We should help her if we can, right?"
I had no idea they'd been sneaking around behind my back all this time.
A deafening c***k of thunder shook the windows, and Rola's breathy moans grew even louder. Apparently, our place had absolutely terrible soundproofing.
Right as the voices reached their peak, I grabbed my phone and dialed Gideon's number.
The soft gasps on the other end stopped instantly.
Gideon answered, his voice rough and strained. "Nellie? What's up?"
"Rola's missing. Have you seen her?"
I slipped out of bed and calmly walked to the door of the next room.
Gideon hesitated for a beat. "No, I haven't."
"Is that so?" The moment the words left my mouth, I drove my foot into the door and kicked it open.
Rola shrieked in terror and dove into Gideon's arms.
The whole room reeked of that heavy sperm scent that hung thick in the air.
I stood there, still clutching my phone.
"Then why is she here with you?"
