Chapter 1: The Race for Captain
The sun hung high over Westfield Academy’s football field, casting bright golden light across the green turf. The air was thick with anticipation, and every player stood at attention, hearts racing faster than their feet.
It was the day they would choose the new team captain, since the seniors will be graduating so the school is already choosing for the new captain of the team. A title that meant respect, responsibility, and pride. And more than anything, it meant victory.
Two boys stood at opposite ends of the field, and everyone’s eyes were fixed on them.
Elian Thorne stood tall, his blonde hair glowing under the sunlight, bright green eyes burning with determination. He had worked for this moment for four long years, training until his muscles ached, running drills until his lungs burned, pushing himself harder than anyone else. He was fast, strong, and full of fire, and he was determined to win. To him, being captain wasn’t just about wearing the armband; it was about proving he was the best, and that he deserved to lead the team to victory.
Across the field stood Kairos Vance. His black hair fell neatly over his forehead, and his striking blue eyes were calm but sharp, taking in every detail. He moved with quiet confidence, as if nothing could ever shake him. He was just as talented as Elian, maybe even more so. While Elian played with passion and speed, Kairos played with strategy and precision. He had led the team through countless wins, and he was ready to take the next step.
From their very first day at school, they had been rivals. Every practice, every game, every position they always competed. They pushed each other to be better, to work harder, to never give up. But today, it wasn’t just about being better than the rest. Today, it was about beating each other.
Coach Hale blew his whistle loud and clear.
“Listen up!” he called out, his voice cutting through the noise. “The captain title goes to the player who shows he can lead, he can perform, and he can win. Today, we settled it one-on-one. Whoever scores first, wins.”
A murmur spread through the team. Everyone knew how close these two were. This wasn’t just a game. It was a battle.
“On my mark… get set… GO!”
Elian sprinted forward immediately, his legs moving fast, his eyes locked on the end zone. He threw his body into every movement, using every bit of speed and strength he had. He could feel Kairos right behind him, close enough that he could almost sense his presence.
He turned around for a split second, and there he was, Kairos, matching his pace perfectly, his blue eyes never leaving the ball or the goal. There was no anger in his expression, only focus and determination.
They ran side by side, every muscle working hard. The wind rushed past their ears, and the sound of their teammates cheering faded into the background. All that mattered was the finish line.
Elian tried to gain an advantage, changing direction quickly, but Kairos was right there, adapting easily, never falling behind. It was like they were made to compete against each other.
With a final burst of energy, they reached the end zone at almost the exact same time. But as Elian reached out to grab the ball, Kairos moved slightly faster, his hand closing around it first, securing the win.
For a moment, everything went silent.
Elian stood there, his chest heaving, his face showing a mix of shock and disappointment. He had given everything he had, but he had lost. He looked over at Kairos, who stood there, holding the ball gently, his face still calm but if anyone looked closely, they would have seen a tiny flicker of something else in his blue eyes.
“Captain is Kairos Vance,” Coach Hale announced, holding up the armband.
The team cheered, but Elian couldn’t bring himself to join in. He felt a twist in his chest not just because he lost, but because he thought Kairos had beaten him fairly. He walked away from the field, his head down, feeling confused and hurt.
He can still hear the other team member talking while walking away.
" Dude, you're really good, you run so fast, I didn't think you'd catch up with Elian, you just suddenly appeared." Mickey said while tapping Kairo’s shoulder.
" Woah is that Isla? "
"Yes, it is, what is she doing here?"
"She's probably here to cheer on whoever will be the captain" said by the people who're around in the field.
Even Elian, who was walking away, stopped and looked at Isla, who was carrying flowers and walking towards Kairos.
" Congratulations Kairos! You're now a captain! I'm so proud of you. And also I would like to let you know that I have feelings for you. Can you be my boyfriend?" Isla praised while holding out the flower and looking at Kairos with fascination.
And because of what Isla said, the people and other team members shouted at the same time.
"Yes!”
"Say Yes Kairos!"
" Say Yes already Kairos it's the Queen Cheerleader, you really hit the jackpot!"
Elian didn't wait for Kairos to answer Isla and turned his back on them completely. He couldn't accept that even the woman he had wanted for a long time would end up with Kairos.
As Elian walked, his mind kept going back to how Kairos acted. He thought about how kind he was to my twin sister Elara, always listening and helping her whenever she needed it.
"Isn't he always with my twin, my twin is almost closer to him, watching them together made me feel strange
Now what is this? Even the person I really like? Will he take it from me too? "
He was shaking with anger and irritation. He couldn't accept that everything he loved and was important in his life was being taken away from him by Kairos one by one.
"I can't take it anymore"
Elian walked further away from the field, his heart feeling heavy. The race for captain was over, and he lost. But now he had another thought in his head, one that made everything feel more confusing.
"What's wrong with him that he wants to take everything I love and care about." Elian said to himself as he continued walking away from the field towards the locker room to clean up.
Kairos stood there, holding the armband. He looked at Elian’s back as he walked away, and the calm expression on his face broke just a little. Beneath the victory and the title, there was something else, something he had been hiding for years.
He had won the race for captain. But deep in his heart, he knew that winning wasn’t the only thing he wanted.
"Kairos" As Isla waved her hand in front of my face, my trance returned.
"So what, are you willing to be my boyfriend---" Kairos didn't let Isla finish and cut her off.
"No, I don't want to, I want someone else" as Kairos looked at the shadow of the person who had just left the field.
Everyone watching them gasped in shock.
"What? Why! And who is that?" Isla said annoyed
"It's none of your business, and thanks for the flowers but you can keep that instead" and Kairos turned his back on her and walked off the field to clean himself
Everyone around was shocked even Isla barely left her spot after Kairos rejected her.
As Kairos walked away, he remembered the emotions he had seen on Elian's face. But it was as if something was telling him that he didn't want to see them on Elian's face.
He felt confused. He just ignored it and walked straight to the locker to get dressed and clean up.
