Chapter 2: A New Beginning

740 Words
'MERCY' Mercy stood frozen in the doorway, her heart shattering as she witnessed the betrayal unfold before her eyes. There, in the dimly lit apartment, were Isaac—the love of her life—and Samantha, the very friend she had confided in, tangled in a moment of intimacy that felt like a knife twisting in her gut. The world around her faded to silence, her mind a whirlwind of disbelief and despair. “MERCY!” Isaac’s voice cut through the haze, but it felt like a distant echo. As if awakening from a trance, she managed to lift her feet and sprint out of the apartment, her heart pounding in her chest. She couldn’t go home, not yet. Instead, she drove to the nearest park, tears streaming down her cheeks, blurring the road ahead. What had she done wrong? Was she a bad girlfriend? Had she not been enough for him? These thoughts spiraled in her mind, threatening to consume her. Time slipped away unnoticed until darkness enveloped the sky. Reluctantly, she left the park and made her way home, the weight of betrayal heavy on her shoulders. As she entered the apartment, the familiar warmth was overshadowed by the ache in her heart. Cloe was sprawled on the couch, engrossed in their favorite show. “Did you forget something?” she asked, her eyes flickering to Mercy, who stood there like a ghost. No answer came; instead, Mercy crumpled into tears, the dam finally breaking. “What’s wrong?” Cloe's voice shifted from casual to concerned in an instant. “I saw Isaac and Samantha on the same bed together,” Mercy managed to choke out between sobs. The words hung in the air, thick with pain. Cloe’s heart sank, and without a second thought, she wrapped her arms around Mercy, offering comfort in silence. “It’s his loss, babe. You will be fine,” she whispered, her voice steady. “Allow me to kill that guy. I’m ready to make his life a living hell.” Mercy couldn’t help but smile through her tears at Cloe’s fierce loyalty. After an hour of comforting, she retreated to her bedroom, her mind racing. She switched on her phone, which she had turned off after Isaac’s calls had become unbearable. The screen lit up with twenty unread messages, each one a reminder of the chaos he had caused: [PLEASE TALK TO ME MERCY] [I KNOW I f****d UP BUT YOU PUSHED ME] [I’M SORRY YOU FOUND OUT LIKE THIS, I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU] The last message struck her like a bolt of lightning. What did he mean by “I was going to tell you”? She deleted the messages, her heart heavy with confusion, and slipped into bed, desperate for sleep but haunted by thoughts of betrayal. The week dragged on, each day an agonizing reminder of what she had lost. Isaac continued to reach out, but nothing he said made sense to her anymore. “Mercy, what would you do if you could get three weeks away from this place?” Cloe asked one afternoon, breaking the silence that had settled over them. Mercy absentmindedly held her fork, lost in thought. “That would be great, Cloe, but how can I afford to go on a three-week vacation?” she replied, her voice lacking hope. “Trust me, it’s possible! One of the bachelors from the hotel—his family owns it—is going on vacation for three weeks on his yacht with friends. My boss asked me to be their chef,” Cloe explained, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Mercy frowned slightly, still not seeing herself in the picture. “Be patient, friend. He recently fired his stylist and needs one to go with him. He’ll be attending some balls during the cruise.” Cloe paused, a knowing smile spreading across her face. “And I already sent an application for you.” Mercy stared at her friend, disbelief mingling with a flicker of hope. “You did what?” “Just think about it! A fresh start, a break from everything. You could use this time to heal,” Cloe urged, her enthusiasm infectious. After a moment’s hesitation, Mercy felt a smile creep onto her face. “Okay, let’s try it.” And just like that, amidst the wreckage of her heart, a glimmer of possibility began to shine through the cracks.
