'Mercy'
Mercy had never liked mornings, and today was no exception. The thought of waking up early, facing her chaotic boss at work, and navigating the daily grind felt like a weight on her chest. For three years, she had endured the ups and downs of being a fashion designer's assistant, but she had grown accustomed to the madness. Chloe, her best friend and roommate, was her rock, always keeping her grounded through the storm of life.
Chloe was a whirlwind of energy, often loud and sometimes a bit annoying, but together they made an incredible team. Chloe worked at an upscale hotel in Y City, a playground for young wealthy bachelors and their fleeting romances. Mercy often joked that Chloe could charm the pants off anyone, while she, Mercy, with her hourglass figure, striking features, and long eyelashes, was still trying to find her footing in the dating world.
Today, however, was special. It marked two years since Isaac had entered her life, bringing with him a sense of hope and possibility. Last year, Chloe had orchestrated a surprise birthday dinner for Isaac, and Mercy was determined to outdo herself this year. She had managed to convince Beverly, her boss, to give her a day off under the guise of working late. In truth, she had planned a romantic day for just the two of them, culminating in a dinner reservation at Antonio's, Isaac's favorite restaurant.
As she drifted into daydreams, Chloe’s loud voice jolted her back to reality. “Morning, sleepyhead! What are you thinking about?” Chloe exclaimed, her energy filling the room. Mercy rolled her eyes, playfully complaining about the volume, but deep down she was grateful for her friend’s enthusiasm.
Chloe had prepared an incredible breakfast, filling the kitchen with delicious aromas. As they sat down, Chloe couldn’t help but prod about Mercy’s recent closeness with Samantha, a mutual friend. Mercy felt a twinge of annoyance; she knew Chloe could be overly protective. “You’re just jealous,” Mercy teased, knowing this was a familiar routine between them.
Chloe’s concern, however, was genuine. “I just want you to be careful. I love you, and I won’t let anyone take advantage of you,” she said, her tone softening. Mercy met her eyes, appreciating the unwavering loyalty of her best friend. “I know, babe. I’ll be careful.”
After breakfast, Mercy took a quick shower and prepared for the day ahead. She packed her beautiful new evening dress—a stunning wine red number with a daring slit—along with some casual clothes, knowing she wouldn't return home until late. Chloe’s mischievous grin made it clear that she was eager for details about the surprise.
“Are you ready for today?” Chloe asked, rubbing her hands together with excitement. Mercy responded with a confident smile, “Born ready, baby girl!” They shared laughter as Mercy relayed the plan for the day, detailing how she would surprise Isaac at home.
Chloe’s playful humor lightened the mood, but Mercy couldn’t shake the feeling of nervous anticipation as she headed out. After a quick drive, she arrived at Isaac's apartment building. With a spare key in hand, she ascended the stairs, her heart racing at the thought of seeing his face when she surprised him.
But as she neared the door to his apartment, an unsettling feeling crept into her gut. It was a strange noise, faint but unmistakable. It sounded like… a woman? Trying to shake it off, she opened his door quietly, hoping to remain undetected.
What she found inside shattered her world.
There, in the dim light of his bedroom, was Isaac, tangled in a passionate embrace with Samantha. Time froze as her heart plummeted. The sight of them together was like a punch to the gut, and all she could manage to utter was his name, “Isaac,” before she turned into a statue, paralyzed by disbelief.
The dreams she had nurtured for two years, the love she thought they shared, crumbled around her as she stood there, caught in a moment she never expected. The betrayal stung fiercely, and in that instant, everything she believed about love and trust felt like a lie.
Now, Mercy had to confront the reality of her broken heart and the sharp edges of deception that had infiltrated her life. What would she do next? How could she move forward from this? As she stood frozen in shock, a wave of emotions washed over her—anger, hurt, and a newfound determination to reclaim her story.
