I believe in many levels of the supernatural. I believe in a God that created the universe and interacts with people. I believe mythology is more closely related to history than most people know and I believe dreams can be windows into the realm of the supernatural. I have always been a vivid dreamer, but there have been a few dreams that have been different. This was the first.
School had started. I was at my locker. I was overwhelmed with loneliness. I was so tired of being surrounded by people, faking smiles. I began to cry. I ran out of the school and just kept running. The sun began to set and I tripped while running through a field. I lay on the ground out of tears but still sad. As I lay there with my eyes closed exhausted I felt a gentle wet touch on my face. I opened my eyes to see a dark pointed eared puppy staring at me. It's eyes were big and brown. The puppy licked my cheek and I pulled it close to me holding it as I fell asleep on the ground.
When I awoke the puppy had transformed into a large black dog, it's eyes glowed yellow as it snarled at me I began to back away, scared. The dog pounced and bit my arm. I pushed it aside and jumped to my feet. Now hurt and angry I picked up a stick from the ground and swung it at the dog yelling "go away" as loud as I could. The dog took a step back and then tucked tail and ran.
I was alone again. I began walking and eventually came upon a town. I wandered the streets. The streets became narrower and steeper until I was climbing up a stair case up a mountain. Slowly the path became rougher until the stairs had become boulders and the town was replaced by a desolate mountain landscape. I was getting tired, and the climb was getting steeper. While climbing a large boulder on the edge of the mountainside my footing slipped. I was hanging on the side of the mountain. Panic filled me as I felt my fingers losing their grip. As my left hand slipped from the edge I was holding I felt a strong grip suddenly wrap around my wrist. I looked up to see a man. His face was tan and he had black hair. He reached down and pulled me up from the cliff edge. I was so relieved to be saved I collapsed to my knees holding the stranger, my savior.
After a time the stranger stood up. He held out his hand to me. I took his hand and e began walking down the other side of the mountain. Instead of treacherous boulders the other side of the mountain was covered in a beautiful golden meadow capped by a blue sky and fluffy white clouds. It was so beautiful! The stranger and I smiled at each other and began running through the field together. We laughed and ran together holding hands. We ran faster and faster until the ground beneath us was a blur. We were now flying side by side, but the stranger looked different. His smile had faded and he looked tired, weary even.
The ground beneath us began to slow. I sat, still floating slowly over the grass, and the stranger lay his head in my lap, closing his eyes as if to sleep. I looked at him. He wasn't a stranger to me anymore, he was my love. I brushed his hair back from his face. We slowly floated to the ground. The stranger slept in my lap, but as I watched his beautiful face I saw the life fading from him. His breathing became slower and slower and the color drained from his face until he was completely still. Tears formed in my eyes.
I looked up from his face to see a small crowd of people. They picked up the body of my love and walked away with him through the beautiful field I watched until I couldn't see them anymore. I sat there on the grass, beneath the blue sky and fluffy white clouds. I was alone again. My love was gone. I was utterly alone and heartbroken. I sat there tears streaming silently down my cheeks.
My eyes popped open, full of tears from the dream. I was in my bed, in my bedroom at my uncle and aunt's house. The emotions of the dream still flooded my whole being. I looked over at the clock, 7:15, I was going to be late for school.
The dream hung around me like a cloud the rest of the day, in fact I have never shaken free of it, though I think all the events in it have now occurred. I didn't want to believe it at the time, but that dream was about my future.
