Chapter 1: The Whispering Forest
The rain had just stopped, and the late afternoon sun filtered through the gray clouds, painting the small town of Thistlebrook in golden light. Silver sat by her window, staring into the woods that bordered the back of her house—the same woods everyone in town warned her never to enter. Not because of danger they could explain, but because of an unease they couldn’t. She had lived in Thistlebrook for just under a week, having moved from the city after her mother’s passing. Her aunt, a quiet woman who lived in the old stone house near the edge of the forest, had offered to take her in. It was a beautiful house with ivy-covered walls and glass windows that looked out over a field of wildflowers. But Silver couldn’t shake the feeling that something about the town—and especially those woods—was hiding something. Silver had always been different. People called her dreamy, distant, lost in her own world. But she knew it wasn’t imagination. Since she was little, she had seen flickers—shadows that moved when no one was there, lights that danced in the corners of her vision, voices that whispered her name when she was alone. Today was no different. The wind picked up, rustling the leaves outside her window. Silver narrowed her eyes. In the distance, just beyond the tree line, she saw movement. Not an animal—too smooth, too graceful. It was a figure, cloaked and glowing faintly blue, watching her. Then, in the blink of an eye, it vanished. She grabbed her sketchbook from the floor and flipped through the pages. There it was—drawn weeks ago, back when she still lived in the city—a glowing figure, cloaked, standing by a forest. She shivered. Later that evening, after her aunt had gone to bed, Silver slipped out the back door. The moon was full and the forest shimmered under its light. Something called to her—not with words, but with a pull, like an invisible string tugging at her chest. She stepped past the last fence post and into the trees. The change was instant. The air turned warmer. Fireflies lit up in impossible colors—violet, gold, deep blue. The trees whispered in a language she almost understood. And ahead, a path appeared, lit by hovering orbs. She walked. Ten minutes in, she met them. A girl with wild auburn curls and eyes like emerald fire stepped into view. “You’re not supposed to be here,” she said. “Neither are you,” Silver replied, surprised by her own calm. Then came another girl, quiet and dark-haired, with a silver bow slung across her shoulder. She didn’t speak, just stared with curiosity. Moments later, three boys emerged from behind the trees—one tall with messy black hair, one shorter with a cocky smile and glowing tattoos on his arms, and one with snow-white hair and piercing golden eyes. “You crossed the veil,” the white-haired one said. Silver blinked. “The veil?” “You came from the other world,” said the quiet girl. Silver took a step back. “What is this place?” “The borderland,” said the curly-haired girl. “You’re in the Between now. And things are about to change—for all of us.” Suddenly, the ground trembled, and a pulse of blue light surged through the forest. The trees bent. The path behind her vanished. “You can't go back now,” said the boy with the tattoos. “The veil has closed.” Silver felt her heartbeat in her throat. “What do you mean I can’t go back?” The white-haired boy met her eyes. “It means your real story is just beginning.”
