The Man Who Forgot Me
The first thing Elena Carter heard was the sound of rain.
Soft and Steady,Almost peaceful.
But nothing about the moment felt peaceful.
She stood across the street, staring through the glass doors of the Blackwood Corporation, her fingers trembling around the photograph she had carried for five years.
A photograph of her husband,Damian Blackwood.
The man she had loved more than anything.
The man she had been told was dead.
Five years ago, Damian had disappeared after a terrible car accident. His family had held a funeral. His belongings had been returned to her.
And Elena had spent five years learning how to live without him.Or at least, she thought she had not until yesterday.
Yesterday, she had seen him alive, standing in the lobby of a hotel.Same tall frame,Same dark hair,Same cold, and unforgettable eyes.
Her husband.
Her Damian.
But when Elena had called his name, he had looked directly at her...
...as if she were a complete stranger.
Now she stood outside his company, fighting back tears.
“This has to be a mistake,” she whispered.
She pushed open the glass doors.
The receptionist looked up.
“Good morning. Can I help you?”
“I need to see Damian Blackwood.”
The woman's expression immediately changed.
“Do you have an appointment?”
“No.”
“I'm sorry, Mr. Blackwood doesn't see people without appointments.”
Elena swallowed.
“I’m his wife.”
Silence.
The receptionist blinked.
Then she gave an uncomfortable smile.
“Mrs. Blackwood passed away five years ago.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“What?”
“I’m sorry, but everyone knows Mr. Blackwood's wife died in the accident.”
Elena slowly shook her head.
“No. She didn't.”
Before the receptionist could answer, the elevator doors opened.A group of executives stepped out,and there he was.
Damian.
Alive.
More handsome than she remembered,More powerful,More distant,Their eyes met and Elena forgot how to breathe.
“Damian…”
He stopped.
For one tiny second, something flickered across his face.
Then it disappeared.
He walked toward her.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“It's me.”
Damian stared at her.
“I'm sorry,” he said coldly. “Have we met?”
The photograph slipped from Elena's hand.
It landed face-up on the marble floor.
A picture of the two of them on their wedding day.
Damian looked down at it.
His expression remained completely blank.
Elena stared at the man she had mourned for five years.
And for the first time, she realized something was terribly wrong.
Her husband was alive, but he didn't remember her.
