Chapter 15: Engagement party

323 Words
My engagement day has finally arrived. The house was decorated in a grand manner, there were exotic foods displayed at the dinning table and everyone was dressed nicely. My grandma made sure everything was okay and in order so her in-laws would be impressed. Everyone looked happy except my mum and I. 'It's time to get dressed, the Cromwells will be here soon' said my Grandma with a smile on her face. She has never looked this delighted to see me in her lifetime. She probably thought this was the first time I'm being of any use to her. 'I got you this makeup artist to work on your ugly face, we can't have the Cromwells see you in your natural state' hissed my grandma before turning to the makeup artist she came with. 'Make her look as beautiful as possible' said my Grandma before storming out of the room. 'Okay ma'am' The makeup artist got to work. I can't lie, she really did a great job. She was able to cover up the hideous scars on my neck so perfectly. I would have loved the makeup if it was for a joyful occasion but it wasn't. 'You look so beautiful miss' said the makeup artist with a pleased look. I wanted to reply but words just couldn't come out of my mouth as I found everything overwhelming. 'You are indeed one of the luckiest people I have ever seen. You're getting engaged to a very rich and powerful man from a wealthy family but you don't look so happy about it' 'That's because I'm not happy. Would you have been happy if you're being forced to marry someone you don't even know' I angrily bursted out The makeup artist just gasped and kept quiet after that. She then helped me get dressed for the big moment. 'I'm sorry for shouting at you' 'It's okay, I'm sorry for adding salt to your injuries'
