The Adelina had been chugging her way upriver for the past four days—maybe people preferred a slow boat to China, but I wouldn’t have minded if the old fishing boat moved a little faster.
Everyone gathered in Captain da Rosa’s cabin, listening while he explained the reasoning behind our slow pace and urging him to plot a speedier course to the lagoon. I grew restless, excused myself, although no one seemed to notice, and went up on deck.
