THE SECRET.
Isabella hurriedly put on her clothes and rushed downstairs.
Due to how fast and clumsy she was, she did not see her step-sister, Ava.
''Watch it! You must.'' Ava hissed at her.
“I-I am sorry.” Isabella stammered and picked up her purse which lay on the floor.
Just as she was about to take another step, Ava pulled her back.
''Where are you off to? To hide your dad's secrets? Or that your late mother?'' Ava sneered.
“Stop talking about my parents, or else I will remove all of your teeth.” Isabella snapped back at her.
“Oh… I am shaking in my boots, please do your worst!” Ava scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Listen to me, Ava. I am not in the mood for you or for your drama, I am supposed to be somewhere in about fifteen minutes.'' Isabella lashed out at her.
“Fifteen minutes? Oh, that is more than enough time.'' Ava hissed.
“What are you doing!” A loud voice came from the back, and Ava turned to see her father, his arms folded across his chest.
“I-I was only talking to sister Isabella.” Ava lied through gritted teeth.
“Really? Is that what is happening here, Isabella?'' David asked, trying to be sure.
“No Dad, I have to meet an old friend in the pack and Ava here is trying to be a nuisance,” Isabella said, shooting daggers at Ava.
''An old friend? Right now? At the park? What is so important that the friend can not wait till tomorrow or what is even so secretive that the friend can not come to the house and tell you?'' Ava chimed in.
''We are discussing a topic called minding your business. You should also take it,'' Isabella said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Oh really? I would love to join you, but I have a degree to chase in medicine, unlike you…who dropped out.'' Ava mocked.
“Enough! I have heard enough from the two of you. Ava, go to your room, now!'' David roared, his voice leaving no room for argument.
“Hmp!” Ava grumbled and went to her room.
David turned to look at his daughter. ''You can go, Isabella, I know this is something important. That's why you are going out even if it is late. Take good care of yourself… I’ll drop you off.''
“Thank you, Dad.” Isabella gave her dad a warm smile.
''Alright, let’s go. We do not want to keep your friend waiting,'' David said.
Isabella gave her father a small smile and both of them left the house.
The car ride was filled with deafening silence, and the only sound that could be heard was the father and daughter breathing.
Isabella’s mind raced with thoughts.
“Who was this mystery person? How did the person even know her? How did this person get her number, and know about her and Sebastian’s relationship?
Was it Helene? Nah.
She hates me, but she can not stoop this low and by the act, she would not resort to such cheap means she is a straightforward person.”
“Anything going on in your mind?” David asked his daughter, who seemed worried.
“It’s about my relationship with Sebastian. After what happened I went to him and told him about my decision to drop out of school. He understood and promised to be by my side till the end .… and he also promised that my past will not judge me or my mother.” Isabella mumbled.
David was quiet for some time. “I am sorry this happened to you, I know how I know how hard you have worked to reach where you are. You know, when I found out about your mother’s rare disease I tried to find a way to help her and also hide her past, but it always came back to haunt us.”
Isabella’s eyes stung with tears. “ I miss her so much Dad. I lost my other ever since I was three, I feel her absence every night. I can not believe she left me. Just when I tried to move on, I learned about her last and I started to make my little moves hoping that I could at least try to pay back what she stole but no matter how hard I tried, it seemed as if I was trying to drink all the water in an ocean. It’s impossible.”
“I am sorry you have been through so much Terri to keep you safe but things are not looking good for me, I had no idea Helene was hell-bent on bringing Theresa’s past to light.” David apologized.
“Why Dad? Why can I not have a life like other girls my age? Go to prom? Have a normal life? Go on normal dates without coming back home to insults and hate speech from my stepmother and step-sister. Why am I so different from my peers?” Isabella complains bitterly.
“I am sorry dear… I did not mean for things to happen to you….in such a way if only I could back the hands of time, I would give you the princess life you deserve. A life where you do not have to go through hell to get what you want, I am so sorry I could not keep the promise I made to your mother. I could not even provide you with the bare minimum…you had to rely on Helene for everything. I feel so useless.” David said, his voice breaking with tears.
“It’s okay Dad, it is not your fault. You had no idea that the company would run bankrupt two months after Mom’s death.” Isabella consoled her father.
David parked the car and opened the door for his daughter.
“Take care dear…and I am behind you if you need me.”
“Thank you, Dad, I appreciate it,” Isabella said and stepped out of the car.
What do you have in store for my life?
