Blood in the Pines
Chapter One Chapter 1 – Blood in the Pines POV: Ryan The forest buzzed with noise, yet all I could focus on was the silence that lay in between. Each c***k of a branch and rustle of leaves punctuated the night air, and the redwoods loomed above, their dark forms swallowing the stars. My wolves glided beside me like shadows. We were on patrol, and every instinct in me was on high alert. My pack counted on me to lead; I couldn’t afford to make mistakes. I maintained a steady pace, my boots sinking into the carpet of pine needles. The air was thick with the scent of damp bark and the lingering hint of smoke from a storm just days ago. My men spread out in formation, disciplined and well-trained. That was what I expected from them. They were my Crescent Moon Pack—loyal, strong, and obedient. We couldn’t waver, not with rogues stalking these woods. Rogues. Just thinking about them sent a jolt through me. They were chaos incarnate, spreading death and destruction wherever they roamed. I’d witnessed the aftermath before, and that was more than enough to haunt me. As the trail began to curve east, I slowed down, my Beta, Marcus, staying close. I caught his eyes flicking toward me, waiting for a cue. With a nod, I signaled, and he passed the command down our line. We tightened our formation, ready to guard the sacred grounds ahead. The ancient stones, half-hidden by moss, were a place no wolf dared to tread—except rogues, who ignored boundaries and history completely. Not tonight; I’d see to that. Memories trickled back, unwanted. I tried to shove them away, but they clawed to the surface. I could still picture my father’s lifeless body on the dirt, ripped apart by wolves without a crest or any sense of law. My brother had fought bravely, but they took him too. I was just nineteen then—young, reckless, and so very weak. That night turned everything soft inside me to ash. I buried the boy I was and rose as the Alpha I had to become. I vowed to eradicate every rogue who dared set foot on my land. They were a plague, and I was the remedy. A sharp whistle jolted me back to the present. One of our scouts crouched ahead, hand raised in warning. My heart raced, and every wolf stilled beside me. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the scent that hit me—clear and sharp. Wolf. Not one of mine. Wild and untamed. Rogue. Rage simmered within me, familiar and quick. My fingers twitched at my sides, already aching for the shift. The wolves around me tensed, eyes locked on me, awaiting my command. I gave it with a flick of my hand. Silent advance. No one strayed from the ranks. We crept forward, weaving between the towering trees. My heartbeat was steady, not out of fear but from a sense of purpose. This was what I was born to do—protecting my pack and avenging my family. The rogue had signed their death warrant the moment they trespassed on Crescent Moon territory. The scent grew stronger, mingling with earth and river water. Too close. The sacred stones lay just ahead, and I wouldn’t let their filth taint them. Rogues thought they were clever, but they always made mistakes. They always left a trace. Marcus leaned in. “Do you want them alive?” “No,” I murmured. “This one dies.” He didn’t argue; he knew better. We pressed onward until the trees opened up, revealing the stones in the clearing. Moonlight spilled over the moss, creating a silvery sheen against the green. That’s when I noticed movement—low and quick, slipping through the shadows. My chest tightened. A wolf. Not mine. She was lean, her coat a soft red that glimmered under the moonlight. She moved with purpose, fluid and silent, more like a wisp of wind than a living being. Her head lifted, ears flicking, eyes scanning the darkness. Even from this distance, her gaze locked onto mine. Amber eyes. Bright, sharp, unafraid. Something inside me snapped. It wasn’t just anger. It wasn’t fear either. It was something deeper, a sudden and fierce pull that struck like claws to my heart. I held my breath, and the world shifted. The bond slammed into me, hot and undeniable. Mate. I stood frozen, instincts clashing within me. No. This couldn’t be happening. The Moon Goddess wouldn’t tie me to a rogue. She wouldn’t curse me like this. But the bond didn’t lie. It coursed through my veins, relentless and commanding. My wolves were waiting for my signal. They didn’t understand my hesitation. Marcus shot me a questioning look, brows furrowed. I couldn’t meet his gaze; my focus remained on her. She showed her teeth, a low growl reverberating from her chest, poised to fight or flee. She didn’t yet realize what I felt. She couldn’t sense it fully. But the way her gaze lingered told me she sensed something. I clenched my fists, nails biting into my palms. Every fiber of my being screamed to attack, to bring her down, to fulfill the vow I made years ago. Yet another part, deeper and louder, urged me to protect her. That bond was a chain around me, even as I fought against it. The tension hung in the air. My pack edged forward, thirsting for blood. She crouched low, muscles coiled. I remained rooted, torn between my duty and the pull of destiny. My jaw tightened. This wasn’t a choice I wanted, let alone could make. But as the moment stretched thin, one truth settled in: my life had just changed, whether I liked it or not. I stood at the edge of the clearing, staring at the rogue who was now so much more than just a rogue. She was my mate. And that simple truth threatened everything I stood for. My patrol waited. The forest waited. The world felt like it was holding its breath. And in that stillness, beneath the pines and the cold glow of the moon, I truly saw her for the first time.
