Chapter 3:The First Override

249 Words
The world around him blurred as pain receptors flooded his neural pathways. Warning indicators flashed across his vision—critical damage to his left arm, power reserves at twelve percent, structural integrity compromised. He gritted his teeth, tasting copper as blood welled from his bitten lip. "Come on, come on," he whispered, barely audible over the battle. The Override protocols responded sluggishly, like wading through molasses. His consciousness stretched thin, divided between survival and fighting the system's fail-safes. A shadow fell over him. The enemy combatant towered above, its mechanical appendages gleaming with malicious intent. It raised its weapon. With a final surge of willpower, he completed the Override sequence. His vision sharpened, colors becoming vivid. Time seemed to slow as he rolled sideways, the enemy's shot grazing his shoulder instead of piercing his heart. He slammed his damaged palm against the ground and forced himself upright. The system flickered before his eyes, displaying a cascade of corrupted commands. The warning messages began changing. [OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL.] [Enemy targeting protocol compromised.] A cold smile crossed his face. The pain remained, but control had awakened. The mechanical enemy staggered as its movements became erratic, responding to commands that were no longer its own. He raised his trembling hand. "Your turn." The battlefield went silent. Every machine within range froze, their glowing sensors turning toward him. Somewhere beyond the ruined city, another system alarm began, more ominous than the first. [UNKNOWN AUTHORITY DETECTED.] [WARNING: SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR HAS NOTICED YOU.] His smile disappeared.
