Chapter One – The Man Who Doesn’t Bleed
The city never really slept. From Hailey Monroe’s tiny apartment window, Manhattan glittered like a thousand promises she couldn’t afford to believe. She pressed her forehead against the cool glass, staring at the skyline as if the answers to her questions were hidden somewhere among the towers. Tomorrow, she had rent due. Tomorrow, the past she had been running from would claw at her again. But tonight, she had a job interview—a last desperate chance. The email had been short, almost cold: Personal Assistant needed. Confidential. Steele Industries. Hailey had almost laughed when she saw the name. Everyone in New York knew Adrian Steele. Billionaire. Tycoon. The man who rebuilt an empire out of ashes and crushed anyone who dared stand in his way. To some, he was an icon. To others, a monster. To her? Just another reminder of how far she didn’t belong. Still, she had nothing left to lose. The elevator ride to the top floor of Steele Tower was silent but suffocating. Hailey smoothed her thrift-store blouse with shaking hands, the hum of the machinery echoing her racing pulse. By the time the doors opened, her breath had already abandoned her. The reception was glass, steel, and power. A world so sharp and gleaming it felt like it might cut her just for standing there. “Miss Monroe?” The receptionist’s voice was polite but distant. “Mr. Steele will see you now.” Her legs felt like lead as she followed the woman down a long corridor. The doors ahead loomed impossibly tall, and when they opened, the first thing she saw was him. Adrian Steele stood with his back to her, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city he owned. The suit on his broad shoulders was immaculate, but his tie hung slightly undone, as if even perfection sometimes choked him. In his hand, a glass of amber liquid caught the light. He didn’t turn when she entered. “You’re late,” he said, his voice low and edged with steel. Hailey’s heart stuttered. “The elevator stopped on every floor. I—” “Excuses.” Finally, he faced her, and the air between them tightened. His face was chiseled, flawless in a way that almost hurt to look at, but his eyes—God, his eyes were carved from storm clouds, carrying a pain so sharp it pierced her from across the room. She had expected arrogance. She hadn’t expected emptiness. Adrian’s gaze flicked over her, unreadable. “You think you can work for me?” Hailey swallowed. “I… I can learn fast. I just need a chance.” “Everyone needs something,” he said bitterly, setting down his glass. “Money. Power. Safety. Which one is it for you?” The bluntness caught her off guard. “Survival,” she whispered before she could stop herself. For the first time, something flickered in his eyes. Not sympathy—Adrian Steele didn’t look like a man who knew how to feel sympathy. But recognition. He moved closer, each step deliberate, like a predator deciding whether to devour or dismiss. When he stopped just in front of her, she had to tilt her chin up to meet his gaze. “Rule number one,” he murmured. “Never tell me the truth. Truth makes you vulnerable. And I don’t hire the weak.” Hailey’s pulse roared in her ears. She should walk away, right now. No job was worth this. But when he turned his back on her as though she didn’t matter, something inside her snapped. “Then maybe you shouldn’t hire me,” she said, her voice trembling but firm. “Because I’m not going to lie just to please you.” The silence that followed was suffocating. She could hear her own breathing, sharp and ragged, waiting for him to laugh, to dismiss her, to call security. Instead, Adrian turned slowly, and for a fraction of a second, the mask slipped. Pain. Raw and unguarded. Then gone. His lips curved into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “Interesting.” Hailey’s heart skipped. “Most people know better than to challenge me, Miss Monroe. But maybe…” He let the words hang, heavy with something unspoken. “Maybe I need someone who doesn’t.” He poured another glass of whiskey, his hand steady despite the cracks in the glass he used—cracks so fine they only showed when the light hit just right. “Congratulations,” he said at last, his tone unreadable. “The job is yours.” Hailey exhaled a shaky breath, but relief didn’t come. Instead, a cold certainty settled over her. She had just stepped into the lion’s den. And Adrian Steele wasn’t just any lion. He was broken, dangerous, and hiding wounds that could destroy them both.
