Chapter 9:A tangle of hearts

985 Words
As Lisa pushed open the heavy glass door of the building, she took a deep breath, relishing the fresh evening air that greeted her. The glow from the streetlights cast a warm hue on the pavement, and the remnants of her beauty launch buzzed in her mind like a sweet echo. Success. It felt exhilarating, yet she couldn't shake off the tension that still clung to her like a shadow. Just as she was about to step out, she collided with Christina, her former best friend turned rival. Lisa’s heart sank, knowing this encounter was going to be nothing short of dramatic. “Oh no, I am just too tired for drama,” Lisa muttered under her breath, preparing herself for the inevitable onslaught. “Hey, congratulations on your success, Lisa,” Christina said, her voice syrupy sweet, but the tension in her smile was palpable. Jealousy was written all over her face, and oddly enough, that gave Lisa a kind of satisfaction. “Thanks, Christina,” Lisa replied, forcing a smile as she brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “It’s been a long journey. I’m glad you could come... even if it was last minute.” Christina’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of irritation dancing across her features. “Oh, please. I had a feeling you’d need someone to keep you grounded amidst all the hype.” Lisa raised an eyebrow. “Grounded? Or perhaps you meant to keep me in check? You know, I was just fine without you interfering. It’s my day, after all.” Christina crossed her arms, her perfectly manicured nails tapping against her elbow. “You always think the world revolves around you, don’t you? But let’s not pretend you didn’t want my approval.” “Approval?” Lisa laughed, the sound tinged with disbelief. “You should know by now that I’ve never needed your validation.” The tension thickened as they stood facing each other, neither willing to back down. Memories of their friendship flooded Lisa’s mind—the late-night talks, the way they’d dreamed of building their beauty empire together before Christina’s ambition turned into competition. “And yet, here we are,” Christina said, her tone lowering as if they were sharing a secret. “I wonder how long before you slip and fall back into obscurity. The beauty industry can be ruthless, you know.” Lisa’s heart raced, a surge of defiance rising within her. “Maybe, but I won’t be alone. I have people who believe in me. People who support me.” “Like that guy you were flirting with tonight?” Christina shot back, her eyes glinting with malice. “You mean your little muse? What was his name… liam? You think he’s really interested in you, or is it the idea of being with the ‘new star’?” Lisa's breath hitched. Memories of the way liam had looked at her during the launch, the way he’d smiled, made her stomach flutter. She’d briefly entertained the idea of pursuing something more, but Christina’s words struck a nerve. “Unlike you, I’m not looking for validation in a relationship,” Lisa retorted, though her voice softened. “But I thought we were past this. I thought we had moved on.” Christina scoffed, her expression hardening. “You’ve moved on, sure. But I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always be a reminder that you’re not as untouchable as you think.” “Then what do you want, Christina?” Lisa’s patience began to wear thin. “Do you want to tear me down because you can’t stand that I’ve succeeded? Or are you just bitter because I dared to stand up for myself?” Silence loomed between them, electric and heavy with unspoken words. Lisa could feel a mixture of anger and regret bubbling inside her. Perhaps they were both holding onto the past, clinging to their once-unbreakable bond, now frayed and twisted by ambition and jealousy. “I want what’s best for both of us,” Christina finally said, her voice softer now, almost pleading. “But I can’t stand by while you bask in the glory that was once ours.” The sincerity in Christina’s tone caught Lisa off guard. “And what’s best for us means pushing me down?” “It means being realistic,” Christina replied, her guard momentarily lowered. “You’re brilliant, Lisa, but you’re also naïve if you think this success will last forever. I just want you to be prepared for when the glitter fades.” “Or maybe I’m the one who will rise above all of this,” Lisa countered, her spirit reignited. “Maybe I’m not as naïve as you think. Perhaps I’ve learned to shine without you, Christina.” With that, Lisa took a step back, the weight of their confrontation crashing down on her like a tidal wave. The evening air felt electric, and the world around them faded as the reality of their rivalry settled in. “Maybe you should focus on your own journey instead of trying to sabotage mine,” Lisa added, her voice steady. Christina’s eyes flashed with hurt, and for a brief moment, Lisa saw the remnants of the friendship they once cherished reflected in her gaze. But that glimmer was quickly extinguished by the darkness of rivalry. “Fine,” Christina said, her voice a whisper now. “I guess we’ll see whose journey leads to where.” And with that, she turned on her heel, walking away, leaving Lisa to grapple with the uncertainty of their future. As Lisa stood there, she felt a rush of empowerment, tinged with exhaustion. The night held promise, but it was also ripe with the suspense of what lay ahead—both in her career and in this tangled web of emotions with Christina, and possibly with Liam
