Episode 1
(Rose POV)
I stood before the full-length mirror in my bedroom, smoothing down the silk material of my burgundy dress. Today marked my third wedding anniversary with Xavier, and despite our rocky relationship, I couldn't help but feel hopeful. My hand unconsciously drifted to my still-flat stomach, where I carried the precious secret I planned to share with him tonight.
Three years of marriage to my fated mate, and yet I felt more like a stranger in my own home than a Luna. The pack house's grand hallways echoed with my solitary footsteps as I made my way through them, a testament to how isolated I truly was. The servants avoided eye contact, scurrying away whenever I approached. I had grown accustomed to this treatment, but it didn't make it hurt any less.
"Maybe this will change everything," I whispered to myself, clutching the small gift box containing the positive pregnancy test. My wolf, Luna, whined softly in agreement, though I could sense her apprehension.
The clock on my bedside table showed 6:30 PM. Xavier would be home soon from his meetings, and I had made sure everything was perfect. The private dining room was decorated with candles and roses, his favorite meal prepared by the pack house chef waiting to be served.
As I descended the grand staircase, my enhanced hearing picked up voices coming from Xavier's study. My heart skipped a beat – he was home early. A smile spread across my face as I approached the door, but it quickly faded when I heard a familiar feminine laugh.
"You poor thing," the voice cooed, dripping with false sympathy. "It must have been so difficult for you, being trapped in this marriage with her."
My blood ran cold. That voice – I would recognize it anywhere. Tara, my twin sister.
"I never wanted her," Xavier's deep voice responded, filled with bitterness. "How could I, when you were the one I've always loved?"
My hands trembled as I stood frozen outside the door. My wolf howled in anguish, the rejection from our mate cutting deep into our soul.
"It's all her fault," Tara continued, her voice taking on a harder edge. "She took advantage of my accident, swooped in and trapped you in this marriage when I was vulnerable. She knew you were mine, but she didn't care."
"That's not true," I whispered, my voice barely audible. But as the words left my mouth, I found strength flooding through my veins. I wouldn't let Tara twist the truth, not again.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the door. The sight before me made my stomach lurch – Tara perched comfortably on Xavier's lap, her arms wrapped around his neck. They both looked up at my intrusion, Tara's expression morphing into one of mock surprise while Xavier's face hardened into the cold mask I had become all too familiar with.
"Well, if it isn't my dear sister," Tara drawled, making no move to remove herself from Xavier's lap. "We were just talking about you."
"I heard," I replied, my voice steady despite the tremors wracking my body. "And I heard you lying, as usual."
Xavier's blue eyes flashed dangerously. "Watch your tongue, Rose. Don't you dare accuse your sister of lying."
"Why did you do it?" Tara asked, her brown eyes – identical to mine – filling with crocodile tears. "Why did you have to replace me?"
The audacity of her question made me want to laugh and cry simultaneously. Replace her? When all I'd ever done was live in her shadow?
"Replace you?" My voice cracked. "You were the one who refused to marry Xavier when his position was threatened. You were the one who ran away to 'recover' from your supposed accident. Our parents forced us into this marriage to save face, to save his position as future Alpha. Don't you dare twist this around."
"Is that what you tell yourself to sleep at night?" Tara sneered, standing up to face me. "That you were forced? We both know you've always wanted what was mine. You've always been jealous of me."
I shook my head, tears threatening to spill from my eyes. "I never wanted to hurt anyone. I rejected the idea at first, even though Xavier and I are mates. I knew he loved you, but our parents—"
The sharp c***k of skin meeting skin echoed through the room before I could finish my sentence. My cheek burned where Xavier had slapped me, the force of the blow sending me stumbling backward. My hand flew to my stomach protectively, terror gripping my heart as I thought of the precious life growing within.
"Don't you dare blame your parents for your schemes," Xavier growled, his eyes glowing with anger. "You manipulated everyone, took advantage of Tara's condition to steal her place. You're nothing but a pathetic replacement, a poor copy of the woman I truly love."
My world spun as I processed his words. All these years, all the love I had given him, meant nothing. I was nothing to him but a substitute for my sister. The gift box fell from my trembling fingers, hitting the floor with a soft thud.
"Xavier, please," I whispered, my hand still pressed against my burning cheek. "There's something you need to know—"
"I don't want to hear any more of your lies," he cut me off, pulling Tara close to his side. "You've said enough. Guards!"
As two burly pack warriors appeared in the doorway, I felt something warm trickle down my thigh. Looking down, my heart stopped at the sight of blood staining my burgundy dress.
"No," I gasped, my knees buckling beneath me. "Please, no."
But Xavier had already turned away, his arm wrapped possessively around Tara's waist. Neither of them spared a glance at my crumpled form as the guards moved to remove me from the study.
My anniversary surprise lay forgotten on the floor, the tiny gift box containing news that would now never be shared, as my world crumbled around me.
