Chapter 4: Lines in the sand

Silence pervaded every part of my penthouse apartment; every creak and quiet breath was amplified, drawing in every sound and shadow cast by outside lighting, seemingly beating to my heartbeat. As I sat idly on a plush leather couch with glass coffee table before me in front of me and fingers caressing its edge, trying to focus my thoughts elsewhere other than what had become unbearably painful chest discomfort, the silence seemed oppressive. Darius had mentioned to me that I was now part of his family, yet what did that entail exactly? Over the course of these past weeks, I learned about their world where trust was both currency and weapon; people often gave it freely without expecting anything in return from others. From watching his interactions with others -- detaching himself with each person around him while remaining distantly controlling -- nothing seemed important except family and business for him--now included me into their fold! My thoughts were still reeling from recent events and I wasn't sure whether to accept Darius' offer to accept another challenge; yet his insistence made clear - whether I wanted or needed it, crossing that line meant there would be no going back! As I stood up, stretching my arms above my head, trying to shake the weight of uncertainty off me, it felt as if an army were camped outside my door -- yet here I was, still feeling as a piece in an unknown game that didn't fully make sense to me. "Suddenly, the sound of elevator doors opening broke the stillness and sent my heart racing as my pulse quickened with expectation of who might enter next - possibly Darius himself or one of his brothers or even a member of security arriving for registration - I quickly learned that no one who came through here came without purpose or goal in mind." Darius entered the penthouse, entering with his usual air of authority and walking straight toward me without even looking over. Instead, he dropped his coat onto a back chair before proceeding directly toward the bar. I had to remind myself to avoid becoming lost in his body's movements: confidence, raw energy and unspoken charisma that always seemed to surround him. Although dangerous in every respect, something about his manner made me trust him even when I knew better. "Long night?" I tried to sound casual; unfortunately my voice came across more subdued than intended. Darius glanced towards me with narrowed eyes as though studying me and considering my words carefully before responding: "That could be said; but no problems here that can't be dealt with." He made smooth movements as he filled himself up, his glass of whiskey reflecting light like the depth of amber hue as he raised it to his lips and raised his glass towards me - I expected him to give one but it never arrived - unlike my fellow passengers at my table who all received drinks too! He didn't offer me one though I certainly wasn't surprised; neither were any others around us! "What should be our next steps?" I finally asked. He didn't immediately answer, instead setting down the glass with a soft clink before looking directly at me with an intense gaze: "You are asking an important question but may not yet be ready to face my response. " I tilted my head, scrutinizing him with great concentration. Our tension had intensified exponentially since before; something raw and unyielding about his eyes sent shivers down my spine. "I'm ready," I declared with confidence despite feeling my stomach twist. Darius didn't smile or even blink; instead he simply stared back at me for an eternity as though trying to decide whether or not he trusted my story. Finally he started walking toward me with careful steps; his gaze never leaving mine once we reached each other again. He stopped just feet away, filling the air around us with an electricity that I couldn't quite explain. My heartbeat quickened, as did my pulse rate; yet somehow I managed to resist taking steps away in an effort to put some distance between us; rather I stood my ground even as his magnetism pulled me towards him. "Fine," said he quietly, but also noted how this no longer is just about him; rather it now extends far beyond both of us. "Yes, I understand," I replied quietly and nodded my head firmly, nodding again as though to confirm what my stomach already knew: that we were together on this path together. You don't need to remind me, thank you very much! His eyes softened for just an instant; but that momentary glance left me questioning what lay beyond that hard exterior he always kept hidden away so carefully. "That would be excellent," the stranger replied in his gentler tone, but still without wavering. "Because I require you to do something important on my behalf. Please." "What?" My curiosity overcame me and I raised an eyebrow, eager to know more. "Tomorrow night there will be a meeting between some of our partners and I. I want you there." "There will also be another sit-down meeting tomorrow afternoon to which you are welcome as an observer." "What kind of meeting are we having today?" I repeated out loud in surprise before trying to understand why he needed me there. Darius took a step back, his eyes never leaving mine, before speaking up again: "This decision no longer concerns just your immediate family; it also affects you as an individual, Simone." "Your future depends on it - where are your priorities going in this business?" he concluded with his insistence. "When I opened my mouth to protest and tell him I wasn't prepared for another plunge into this world, he raised his hand abruptly preventing any dialogue from transpiring between us. "Whether or not you like it or not," he warned in a voice that was almost too calm, "You are already part of this whether you like it or not," he noted. "People at that meeting--like those at the warehouse--will see you and test you just like those men did. That is just how it works: as part of this family you should stand with us to show that you belong here." Darius' words sent a chill down my spine; I couldn't pin point what exactly was making me uncomfortable; perhaps fear or something darker; either way, just being put through another trial made me uneasy; though Darius mustn't know that part of me was fearful or that some parts were scared. "I'll be there," I finally replied with firm conviction in my voice. "Good," he nodded with satisfaction in his eyes. At first neither one of us spoke. Instead, the weight of conversation settled like dust upon us both; I could feel tension mounting between us but wasn't sure whether it stemmed from business issues or something more personal that neither of us wanted to address at that moment. "So is that all?" I broke the silence to attempt to change the mood and break stalemate. Darius didn't respond right away, opting to move instead to the window with his back toward me while gazing out over the city below. Instead of following him over there I chose not to and stood rooted where I had originally stood instead - not sure whether I needed some additional words from him, or whether just needed time to process what had occurred between us. "I don't know why you're here, Simone," the voice spoke softly yet distantly, "but one thing's certain - once here, there is no going back - you are part of this movement whether or not it suits your fancy." His words hurt deeply but there was truth behind them I couldn't deny. I realized I had become involved with something bigger than myself that wouldn't be easy to escape from, sending an instant wave of panic through me until I remembered how he looked at me--as though he believed I mattered in this world and could handle whatever came my way. "Yes," I replied softly this time. "But don't worry; I won't leave." Now he was looking at me again with eyes narrowed slightly and something unreadable in his gaze made my stomach flip over. For an instant I thought something else might emerge that might change everything but instead he simply nodded his head. "Get some rest," he advised me in his firm voice, and added, "Tomorrow will be crucial. Don't do anything before then!" "This will all become important tomorrow. So make sure that everything's ready before then." After his reply, he turned and left, leaving me standing there alone once more, trying to comprehend everything that had transpired - after all, I had said the words and agreed with everything, now being part of something much larger than myself. But I still had unanswered questions: what type of game was I engaging in and for whom?
