Chapter 1: The Brothers’ bond
Darius stood on the penthouse terrace, taking in its constant thrum of activity from below the city streets below him. From here, life seemed both far away and close at once; neon lights lit up the dark nightscape illuminating it like stars on a string; headlights occasionally breaking through its darkness to illuminate his view of world beyond.
Darius didn't need to turn around to feel Jalen's presence--it was like an ever-present shadow that never failed to fill an empty room without even trying. Jalen filled a room effortlessly, his charisma emanating from him like an aura. While Darius preferred controlled and deliberate decisions, Jalen was often more spontaneous and spontaneous; their differences actually worked well together when it came down to business matters. They often disagreed passionately over topics but in terms of business deals there was no one Darius trusted more than Jalen when dealing with business matters involving Jalen.
"What are you thinking?" Jalen asked. His voice cut through the silence of the city.
Darius turned slightly, looking over his shoulder at his younger brother Jalen who was leaning back against the bar sipping whiskey from an open bottle. His posture was relaxed but eyes always alert. His dark locks had fallen out over time for an irreverent look that never felt out of place; tattoos covering his arms and neck only added to this sense of danger that seemed natural for Jalen.
"Just considering my next move," Darius replied in an unhurried voice, turning away from the window and moving towards the couch. "Our empire's expanding, so it's essential that we handle its growth properly - there's much at stake!"
"Don't think too hard. Things have been running smoothly here for years - no big change's gonna occur anytime soon!" Jalen laughed while taking another sip from his drink.
Darius sat down, folding his hands in front of himself. "We're not the only ones seeking more power; you know this."
Jalen set his glass on the counter and walked over, sitting next to Darius. For an uncharacteristically long moment, his expression remained blank; but soon afterward he relaxed back, giving a small smile at one corner of his lips. "I know," Jalen replied in his monotone voice, "but we have an excellent team; together, we always made things work, and are smarter than most others. Don't tell me you're starting to doubt us."
Darius tightened his jaw slightly but did not show his irritation at Jalen. Jalen always had a way of making him feel like he was overthinking things, something which both annoyed and amused Darius. Although he never doubted their capabilities - nor their capabilities of working in their world which was always changing and unpredictable- he did have more factors to take into consideration with every decision they had to make carrying weight and responsibility.
Darius answered slowly. "I'm not doubting," he stated quietly, "but I won't allow us to slip up now; we have worked too hard."
Jalen gave a soft laugh. His eyes sparkled. "Don't forget you have someone like me in your corner. Always."
Darius felt comforted as the words hit home like they always did: straight to his core. No matter how often they fought or disagreed, nothing could break trust between them; Jalen was his brother, blood, partner; in truth they were invincible against any threats on the horizon that might threaten that belief.
Darius was brought back into the present when footsteps approached from the hallway and Darius saw Tasha enter wearing an elegant black dress, her hair perfectly styled, her expression unreadable - as always she held his family together with an air of strength that made him more dangerous than Jalen could.
"Do you two get into it often?" she inquired as she approached the bar. "Because I can hear you two arguing from down the hallway."
Jalen beamed with pride as he spoke, his simple yet confident tone showing. "Just keeping big brother on their toes."
Tasha gave Darius an aggressive stare with an air of affection in her gaze. "You should listen more," she advised, "as controlling everything will eventually drive yourself mad.
He looked her in the eyes, his lips quivering slightly as he answered: "I don't intend to control everything; all I care about is making sure everything runs smoothly."
She poured herself a drink and shrugged. "Don't think you have to do this all on your own; we are here."
Darius nodded slowly as his siblings reminded him. Their siblings had always had his back no matter what. Through blood, sweat and tears they'd built this empire together - family. That bond would remain unbreakable even though the road ahead may prove challenging - Darius knew they'd face it together as always.
Tasha spoke up after a moment's silence. Her eyes flashed sharply: "So," Tasha continued, "what's our next move, Darius?"
Darius exhaled slowly while considering her query. His next move would require careful consideration; there were both opportunities and threats present; his mind raced through each possible scenario with precision.
"I am working on several things. To expand into new territories and gain greater control of certain sectors. Our allies must remain close while enemies should remain far," he stated with measured voice.
Tasha raised an eyebrow. "What about...other distractions?" she inquired, her tone softening slightly.
Darius didn't need to ask what Simone meant. Her image lingered in the back of his mind like an anchor that made it hard for him to focus. Simone was bright, beautiful and intelligent--an asset to their business but Darius understood the risks inherent in mixing pleasure with business.
Darius responded quickly. No need for interruptions when so much was at stake. "I have it under control," was his assurance.
Jalen smiled widely as his smile broadened further. "Oh, I think I know exactly what 'handling it' means," he teased, "You don't fool anyone, big brother."
Darius gave Jalen an aggressive stare. "Don't stop, Jalen! Keep pushing forward."
Tasha laughed softly, clearly enjoying their banter. Darius could see that Tasha was taking note of all that was going on around them - from family matters, business strategies and those who could try to undo everything to potential threats that may try to pull down her future plans.
"Just don't get too comfortable," she advised, her voice soft but with an air of caution. "The game's never as straightforward as it appears."
Darius nodded slowly, his mind already racing forward with plans. Although the game had never been easy for him to understand and manage, Darius knew exactly how to approach each new challenge he encountered and needed to face head on in order to succeed.
Later That Night Darius stood again by the window, gazing into the darkness beyond. His siblings had been right: he could count on them. Though their journey ahead would not be smooth sailing, having each other by their sides would suffice - at least temporarily.
As his thoughts drifted back towards Simone, he couldn't shake the feeling that events would soon become much more complicated.
