Alex's eyes searched Sophia's, his gaze intense. "I used to work for a cartel," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was deep in, Sophia. But I got out, and now I'm in witness protection." Sophia's mind reeled, trying to process the information. "What does that mean?" she asked, her voice shaking slightly. "It means I'm hiding from them," Alex replied, his jaw clenched. "They'll stop at nothing to silence me. And if they find out about you... " Sophia's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?" Alex's eyes locked on hers, filled with a mix of fear and longing. "You're a detective, Sophia. If they find out we're together, they'll use you to get to me." Sophia's mind raced, trying to comprehend the danger Alex was in. She thought about her job, her family, her life. But she couldn't imagine walking away from Alex. "I don't care about the danger," Sophia said, her voice firm. "I want to be with you, Alex." Alex's face twisted in a mix of emotions. He pulled Sophia close, his lips crashing against hers in a desperate kiss. As they broke apart for air, Sophia knew she'd made a choice. She'd stand by Alex, no matter the cost. But little did she know, the cartel was already closing in...
