Chapter Sixteen

694 Words
As it was, my concern that Helios would leave, had diminished once Rose turned. For if I knew Helios, and I most certainly did, he would never break a promise. It took a little more than a week for Rose to regain her strength fully. And though she was slow with that, she learned very quickly. And, was a willing student. I was very impressed with her willingness to feed off another, so if I had had the courage I would have taken advice from her on how she did it without regret. There was so much to learn and so much that I could teach her, but as it were, I thought it better that Helios do the educating. She was so quick at many of the skills that, in my fifty or so years, I had difficulty learning that even Helios was impressed. I fell in love with her more every day. As the days turned into months and months into years, I found it peaceful and had never been happier. The war in America had ended in April 1865. Men from both sides headed home to their families and lived the rest of their lives in peace. And though s*****y had just about been abolished in Louisiana, it took a long while for such a thing to occur. I was quite content and relived when our slaves were freed from their b*****e; though Rose was a bit put out, she understood and reluctantly gave her's their freedom. The North or, as it was said at that time, the Yankees, had won the war and the Union was restored. And s*****y had been deemed illegal and all but abolished. This didn't happen overnight, however. President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated three days after the war had ended by a want to be actor by the name of John Wilks Booth. It took twelve days to track him down and bring him to justice. Though he was killed in the pursuit. I myself didn't care much, for politics. And whatever happened in the human world was their business. We just kept to ourselves and, as the century passed into the twentieth, we got along well with new inventions as old ones became obsolete. Even the shipping industry was taking its weight with new ocean liners built every day. There were two that caught my interest. The Titanic and the Olympic. They were sister ships almost identical and built a year or so apart. They were the largest to be built at that time. The one that caught my eye was Titanic for, as some had said was, unsikable. This news intrigued me as I read the paper. I showed Helios this new ship built by the white star line. All he did was huff. "These humans are so pathetic with their irritating claims," He stated. "This is quite extraordinary though you must admit Helios. A ship as big as a mountain." I said. "Yes. The bigger the better. Their pomposity will get the better of them one day. Mark my words, Erin. Something dreadful is about to happen." And Helios was indeed correct. For on the night of April 15, 1912, the lovely ocean liner Titanic sank in the middle of the North Atlantic, on her maiden voyage, no less. More than 1,500 people lost their lives that night. Froze to death in the freezing waters. It was the story of the century. And it hit me hard for this beautiful ship was made in Britain. When Helios heard the news he was not surprised. "Told ya so." He said as he walked into the next room. I sat stunned. "Still reading my mind, I see." I stated. "All those poor people. They must have been so frightened. Knowing they would die in such a horrible way." Said Rose, solumly. "It's as Helios predicted. Their vanity got the better of them. And the passengers paid for it with their lives," I added. I went over to her and held her tightly. "When will this b********y end?" She asked. "When man learns from his mistakes. Which i wouldn't hold your breath on that, my dear."
