As evening fell, Thomas went to bed. Helios and I stayed up a while longer.
"So what do you think, Erin?" Asked Helios, drinking down his drink.
"About what?"
"About our new home? And our new servant, Thomas? Poor fella must have been through a lot. I wonder how long he was sitting there before we came along." I c****d my head in confusion.
"Should we have taken him in?" Helios smiled.
"I wasn't about to let him go off all alone. Anyway, he could be a really great asset." I then realized what he was talking about. We would pass ourselves off as slave owners and reap what others had sewn. I didn't like this idea and I strongly protested my feelings to him. But Helios was calm and collected.
"We need to blend in, Erin. And most here are slave owners and manage a plantation. Now how strange would it be if we had this plantation and no slaves to tend to it?" I looked away from him in disgust. He was absolutely right and I knew it.
"Fine." I said. I then got up and walked to the door.
"Where are you going?"
"For a walk." I replied, slamming the door behind me as I walked out.
I walked as far as the road, but decided to walk a little further. I found myself on another plantation. I then heard wheeping. At first I thought it was the wind, but as I climbed the hill, I saw a young woman sitting on the ground. I approached her slowly.
"Are you alright miss?" I asked softly. She looked up at me and whipped her tears away.
"Oh I'm fine thanks." She said, straightening her dress.
"You dont look fine. Why are you crying?" I didn't want to pry, but for some reason I was concerned. She shook her head and began to cry again. I knelt down beside her. She looked up at me with such heartache.
"My husband is... dead." she said through her tears. My heart sank at hearing this.
"I'm so sorry," I said.
She looked up at me.
"I don't know what to do. I'm all alone." My heart hurt for her, but I really had to be on my way. But I didn't want to leave her there in her grief. I reluctantly stood up.
"Im Erin. I just moved into the plantation down the road." She smiled.
"Thats nice. I'm Rose. Um... I know this may sound a little strange, since we just met and all but, will you stay with me a while?" I was surprised she asked me to stay, but I couldn't refuse. She was so sad and if it took me staying with her to make her happy, then so be it.
"Yes, of course I will." I said, sitting down next to her.
"Will you hold me?" She asked, looking so very sad. I reluctantly put my arm around her. At first I felt a little uncomfortable, but then, I felt at ease again when she cuddled up to me.
