Vaelra’s POV
In the morning I awoke in the forest.
I felt like my head was heavy, and my body was sore, in places I did not even know I had. I stood there a few seconds, gazing at the trees overhead, and wondering where I was and how I happened to be there. Then the memories began to trickle back.
Rhevik.
The mistress.
The forest.
The camp man.
My heart sank, and I had to sit up.
It was then that I recalled what happened, I was marked.
I froze.
I was not sure what to think a moment. I felt afraid, and I had to control myself. In some cases, rogue wolves would mark individuals in times of unstable emotions or heat. It did not necessarily imply a true mate relationship.
“Just a rogue mark.” I said to myself. “Nothing serious.”
I put down my hand and arose slowly.
“I will see to it later,” I said to myself.
At this moment I only had to go home.
I walked out of the woods and made my way back to the pack territory. My head was empty and full simultaneously. With each step, I got heavier and heavier, nevertheless.
It was weird to stand in front of the house when I arrived at it. This was the home that I shared with Rhevik. It was only now that it was quiet and unfamiliar.
I banged the door open and went in.
Thyra was present.
She glanced up at once she saw me.
She altered her calmness to concern.
She said, “Vaelra. where have you been?”
I vacillated a moment. Then I strolled slowly towards her.
I replied, “It is a long story.”
She made no advance towards me. Just draw a chair nearer and sat on it. “Tell me all.”
So I did.
I explained to her about Rhevik. I informed her of the rejection. I explained to her about the mistress and the pregnancy. I explained to her all that I had gone through. I did not leave anything out this time. I had a few moments of voice breaking, but Thyra made no interruption.
The room was silent when I had finished.
Thyra stood up and came closer. She laid her hand on my shoulder.
“He is unworthy of you, he does not deserve you,” she said. “It is not your fault.”
I said to myself, I looked down and said, “It feels like it is.”
She shook her head immediately.
“No. No, it is not,” she said and hugged me tight and we stayed like that for some time.
After a while I put a question to her which I was minding.
I replied, “You are going to the mating ceremony to-night?”
Thyra paused slightly, then she shook her head.
“No. I will not go any more,” she said.
I looked at her.
I said, “Why? You might still meet your mate. You should not give up.”
Thyra smiled a little, wearily.
“I have already been to two ceremonies,” she said, “and nothing has happened, and I do not think I have any more hopes of something that will not happen.”
I replied, “Butit might yet occur. You never know.”
She leant back in her chair and sighed.
“I am tired, Vaelra, I do not wish to go and be disappointed once more.” She said with a sigh.
I gazed at her a little, and shook my head.
I replied, “then perhaps mates are not so good after all.”
Thyra gave a little laugh.
“Perhaps they are,” she said.
We both laughed a little, the first time that day.
It felt normal.
It was like there was still hope.
Having eaten, we cleaned and got ready to sleep. The house was silent again. I was physically but not exclusively so exhausted. My head was still in a jumble, but in the presence of Thyra it was easier to breathe.
We went to our rooms and lay down.
I cannot recall falling asleep right away, however, I remember that Thyra was safe by my side in the house.
That was soon to be a short-lived comfort.
A few minutes after we had gone to sleep , I heard a loud knock at the door.
It was immediate and acute.
Thyra too rose up by my side.
“Who is that at this time?” she said.
The knocking was repeated.
I hastened out of bed.
“I will see,“ i said.
I descended the stairs and went to the door. I was already feeling uneasy in the heart, though not knowing why.
I opened the door.
Outside were royal guards.
I was stopped in my breath.
One of them came forward.
He replied, “ Vaelra Nyxen we are here on account of Thyra Nyxen that the Alpha has bidden us take Thyra Nyxen to the palace at once.”
