Chapter Seventeen
Ramirez certainly hadn’t won any brownie points. As I stormed in the house and slammed the slider shut with a satisfying thud, it was clear everyone in the surrounding counties had heard our volatile exchange. In fact, I was more than a bit surprised Nicoh hadn’t begun howling, though it pleased me immensely when Ramirez entered a short time later and my canine companion pressed himself against me, serving as my stoic protector. Ramirez reached out a hand for him to sniff but Nicoh sensed my anger, thrust his head and shoulders higher and ignored the offering.
Meanwhile, Abe, Elijah and Leah attempted to make a show of reviewing various notes, spreadsheets and laptops, though I could feel the heat of their stares on my back.
