Onitsha migrated to their present location from Benin,the capital city of present day Edo state Southwest of Nigeria. History says that war broke out between Ezechima and his brother who is succeed their father the late Oba of Benin. Ezechime being the older son naturally supposed be the heir but conspiracy and betrayal led to his losing the throne to his brother which didn't go down well with him and with the support of her sister who's loyal to him moved eastwards to create his own autonomous community. They journeyed from Benin to the present day Delta state where most of his men found uninhabited lands and settled their, he and his sister moved on and crossed the Niger River and settled across it,that's why we are known today as (Onitsha mmili) Onitsha that crosses the river. Due to them settling anywhere they found habitable,there are many towns scattered all over the interior part of Igboland and the coastal region that traces their origin to Ezechime. So he became the first Obi of Onitsha and the only sister that followed him,due to their custom and beliefs then cannot be king(cos she's a woman) but was granted the sole privilege of birthing kings and thus continues until now.

To be an Obi of Onitsha,your mum must come from Ogboli Olosi(the village of her descendants).
