Chapter 5I woke the next morning mortified at what an ass I’d been. Fortunately, Sunday night I’d called the office and left a message that I’d be out sick today. So I had a day to get myself together and apologize to my friends for abruptly abandoning them. First, I called Neal and apologized for running out on him. He accepted the apology, but still sounded pissed. I didn’t blame him. Then I phoned Mike, who was more important to me. “Look, I’m really sorry about yesterday. I was an i***t and hope you’ll forgive me,” I rushed to say. “Where are you? Home? I’m coming over.” “Okay, but—” He hung up before I could tell him I was okay.
