Chapter 1
In the fifth year of their marriage, Isaac Pinecroft arranged for Reina Morley to take on a young secretary.
"Nina is my friend's daughter. She just graduated from college. She's young, simple minded, and has a bit of a temper. If there's anything she doesn't understand, be patient and teach her."
The girl lifted her head. She was only in her early twenties, delicate and pretty, with smooth fair skin.
Standing behind Isaac, she spoke cautiously. "Hello, Reina. My name is Nina."
When they first met, Reina had no idea that this girl would one day pose such a great threat to her.
It was not until three months after Nina started working that Reina received a text from her.
Nina: Reina, there are some things I don't understand and want to ask you about. Could you come to my place?
Reina had promised Isaac that she would take good care of Nina, so she went without the slightest hesitation.
When Reina arrived at the address in the message, she saw two people by the floor to ceiling window on the second floor.
Nina was wearing nothing at all. She was pinned against the glass by a man, his movements so explicit they were hard to look at.
That man was none other than Isaac, the husband she had been married to for five years.
By the window, the girl's trembling voice carried through the glass.
"Mr. Pinecroft, I told you I won't be a mistress. Why did you come to see me again?"
Isaac's voice was low and restrained, thick with desire. "Who said you're a mistress?"
The young girl frowned unhappily and reached out to stop what he was about to do next.
"You and Reina aren't divorced yet. If I'm not a mistress, then what am I?"
Isaac turned her soft body around and lowered his head to kiss her on the lips. "I'll say it again. You are not a mistress. If this really bothers you, I'll go back and have Reina sign the divorce papers, all right? And from now on, call me Isaac."
"Okay. Ah, Isaac..."
The sounds of their intimacy never stopped. Reina stood there blankly in front of the window, feeling the pain in her chest grow sharper and sharper until even breathing hurt.
Back in Everest City, Isaac had always been known as someone flamboyant and indulgent. His private life was chaotic, and he had gone through many partners, but he had never taken anyone seriously.
Five years ago, at an advertising design competition, Isaac fell in love with Reina, who had only just entered the workforce.
Everyone thought Isaac would never settle down for anyone in this lifetime, yet he willingly chose Reina.
The first time he took Reina home, at the dinner table, Isaac's father, Collin Pinecroft, said that Reina "came from an ordinary background and was not worthy of Isaac."
Isaac did not say one extra word. He simply took Reina by the hand and left.
Even when Collin furiously declared that he would cut ties with Isaac, Isaac never looked back.
After walking out of the gates of the Pinecroft family home, Isaac said, "Reina, you are the only one I want in this life. Without you, I want nothing. The money from Pinecroft Manor means less to me than a single strand of your hair!"
Later, they really did get married. Collin had no way to stop Isaac, and after seeing Reina's abilities, he finally accepted her.
Over the years, Isaac's love for Reina had always shown in countless small details.
When Reina wrote advertising proposals, she liked to bite the end of her pen, so Isaac kept seven or eight pens in different colors in her desk drawer. Worried that she might hurt her mouth, he even polished every pen cap smooth with his own hands.
Isaac's phone gallery was filled with photos of Reina, and both his phone passcode and bank card password were Reina's birthday.
Every winter, Reina's hands and feet were always cold. So every night before bed, Isaac would tuck her feet into his arms and warm them for her. No matter how icy her feet were, Isaac never once frowned.
Reina had never imagined that after only five years, Isaac would already want to divorce her for another woman.
Reina did not leave. She waited downstairs for Isaac the whole time.
Three hours later, Isaac came down, still smiling at the corners of his mouth.
The moment Isaac saw Reina standing in the shadows, the smile on his face froze. "Reina, why are you here?"
