The girl born at midnight
Chapter 1 The kingdom of Velmora feared the night. Not because of thieves. Not because of war. But because darkness in Velmora carried memories. Old women whispered that the shadows listened. Children were warned never to stare too long into mirrors after midnight. Even the palace servants hurried through hallways once the moon rose, clutching candles with shaking hands. For twenty years, the kingdom had lived under one terrifying story. The story of the Shadow Queen. Some called her a monster. Others called her cursed. But everyone agreed on one thing: She had nearly destroyed Velmora. And before her death, she left behind a prophecy. “When the moon bleeds purple, I will return.” Most people believed it was only a myth. Until the night the clocks stopped. Rain hammered against the palace windows like restless fingers. Thunder growled across the sky, shaking the tall silver chandeliers hanging from the ceiling of the royal chambers. Queen Seraphine screamed in pain as maids rushed around her nervously. “She’s losing strength,” one whispered. “Call the royal healer!” “He’s already here!” The room smelled of burning herbs and fear. Outside the chamber doors, King Lucien paced endlessly through the hallway, his black boots echoing sharply against the marble floors. His jaw tightened every time another scream came from inside. A storm this violent was unnatural. And deep down, he knew it. Then suddenly— Silence. The screaming stopped. The thunder stopped. Even the wind disappeared. The king froze. Slowly, the chamber doors creaked open. The old midwife stood there pale as death. “Your Majesty…” she whispered shakily. “The child has been born.” Lucien pushed past her immediately. The moment he entered the room, every candle flame flickered purple. His heart stopped. Queen Seraphine lay exhausted against the silk pillows, cradling a tiny baby wrapped in white cloth. But it was not the child’s cry that filled the room. Because the baby was not crying. She was staring. Her silver-grey eyes were wide open, calm and watchful as she looked around the chamber. A newborn should not look at the world like that. The king moved closer slowly. Then every clock inside the palace stopped at once. Tick— Silence. The servants gasped. One maid dropped to her knees instantly. “The prophecy…” “Quiet!” Queen Seraphine snapped weakly. But fear had already spread across the room. The king stared at the child carefully. She looked almost ordinary beneath the candlelight—soft dark curls, pale skin, tiny fingers curled against the blanket. Then he saw it. A black mark wrapped around the baby’s wrist like smoke. His blood ran cold. The royal seal. Impossible. “No…” Lucien stepped backward slowly. The midwife crossed herself in terror. “It cannot be.” But everyone in that room Lightning exploded across the sky. The baby finally blinked. Then she smiled. A tiny, gentle smile. And somewhere deep beneath the palace… something ancient awakened.
