The heavy ball of dread sitting in Zach’s stomach lightened a little when Dani stepped in the door. She smiled at Mark, who sat at the small dining table, but Zach noticed the smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. He finished setting carrying things to the table. That she’d come in on her own gave him hope. “You’re right on time. I was going to send Mark out to let you know we were ready in just a minute.” “Good. Let me wash up and we can sit down and eat.” “No problem, you need something more to drink?” “Yeah, water would be great.” Zach poured water for the three of them and Mark carried them to the table and when Dani reappeared, they all took their seats at the table. They served themselves and settled into what was becoming their evening habit but Zach worried that Dani was pissed
