I woke up to the room covered in darkness. I looked over to the empty spot next to me. I felt the cold sheets and wondered where David was. I grabbed my phone and saw it was almost two in the morning. I put my phone down and laid back on the pillow. He must be down stairs unable to sleep. That’s what I will convince myself for now. I rolled over and closed my eyes.
I woke up again. I quickly looked over and saw David asleep. I moved closer to him and laid my head on his chest. His warmth was comforting and falling back asleep was easy. I woke up to David moving. He was slowly slipping out of bed and I pushed myself up.
“Hey, sorry I woke you.” David said leaning over and kissing me.
“It’s ok. I don’t think I slept very well last night.” I said moving over.
“Me either. A run helped me catch at least a few hours.” David said getting out of bed and making his way towards the bathroom.
“A run?” I asked and he walked into the bathroom.
“A term we use when we transform and well, run I guess.” David said from the bathroom and I heard the shower start. I got up and walked to the bathroom. David was brushing his teeth, leaning over the sink.
“I woke up while you were away. I thought maybe you were down stairs. Its interesting that you don’t want to leave me Saturday, but can leave me alone at two in the morning.” I said as he spit and rinsed. He grabbed the towel and wiped his face.
“There are people here that would’ve notified me about the danger. I would’ve been back faster then you could’ve ever imagined.” David said before turning to the shower. He began to undress and I turned going back into the bedroom. I grabbed my phone and saw it was still early. I clicked to my messages. I saw Tonya had been messaging me asking where I was and why I hadn’t answered her calls. I messaged her that my phone had died and I lost it. I found it and it’s now completely charged and everything was all right. Moments after I hit send, the phone started to ring. I knew with out a doubt it was Tonya.
“Ryan I was starting to actually worry. I don’t think I’ve gone a full day without hearing from you since before we were friends.” Tonya said.
“I know, I’ve been at David’s the past few days. I forgot my charger and didn’t realize it until I couldn’t find it. David tried to call it but then I found out it was dead. I found it and charged it last night.” I lied the best I could and Tonya laughed.
“You’re such a numb skull sometimes.” She said and I laughed. “So you’re at David’s for a few days?” She asked.
“Well yeah. You know Matt showed up at my place while I wasn’t home. So David has insisted I stay here.” I said and heard the shower stop.
“You’re joking! How?” Tonya’s voice was serious and concerned.
“I have no clue. Not even you have my new address.” I said as David appeared in just a towel.
“I know! This is getting scary. The only time he messaged me was asking when I wanted your car. I said as soon as possible and he still hasn’t left it here.” Tonya said.
“I don’t care much about the car anymore. I’m to the point I’m going to report it stolen and buy a new one.” I said with a sigh.
“I agree.” She said and then there was silence. “So well, how long are you staying at David’s then?” Tonya said in her gossipy tone.
“Oh, I probably won’t leave David’s.” I said and there was silence again from the obvious shock.
“Are you being serious or joking?” Tonya said.
“No I’m being serious.” I said and I felt David’s hand on my back. I turned to his smiling face and he kissed my lips.
“Do you think that’s wise? Just less then a week ago you were claiming you weren’t even together.” Tonya said.
“I do and I know.” I said flatly trying to end her words of discouragement. David trailed kisses down my shoulder.
“I don’t know what to say. To me this is soon. I’m shocked you don’t feel the same way. I just don’t understand.” Tonya said still in shock.
“You don’t have to. Trust me, this is the best place for me right now.” I said as David started sucking my neck. I bit my lip trying to hold back any odd sound that would give us away.
“Well gosh I just won’t worry about it any more! I can’t wait for next week when you causally tell me your pregnant.” Tonya’s voice dripped with anger and sarcasm.
“I promise if my IUD falls out and I get pregnant, you’ll be the first person I call.” I said just as sarcastic.
“Well I’m going to go.” Tonya was upset that I seemingly wasn’t taking her seriously.
“Ok talk later.” I said hanging up and turning to David. “You made that difficult!” I said.
“Sorry I got excited when I heard you were staying.” David said kissing my lips again. “I’ll arrange to have everything brought here!” David said with such excitement that he hoped out of the bed.
“You’re going now? In just your towel?” I asked and he stopped at the door.
“Ok first clothes, then I’m going to my office.” David said.
“You’re going to your office across town or your home office? You have a home office?” I asked.
“Yeah. You wanted to skip the tour. I mean now that you’re living here, you should probably look around.” He said with a slight chuckle.
“Yeah.” I said and it didn’t even sound convincing to myself. David stopped and looked at me. “Maybe Tonya is right and this is all soon and we’re just rushing into it.” I said.
“Are you changing your mind already?” David asked.
“No, I mean. I don’t know. We don’t even know each others birthdays or middle names.” I said and David shook his head.
“Ryan Pamela Williams, April twenty fifth.” He said and we stared at each other.
“How did you… I never mentioned it.” I said.
“Your middle name was on your resume and your birthday was on your on boarding stuff.” David said getting dressed.
“How come you do that?” I asked curiously.
“Do what?” David slipped on a nice blue button up dress shirt.
“You remember things, it’s almost like you’re showing me from day one that you liked me more then I liked you.” I said and David looked slightly confused.
“I guess I just wanted to know everything I could about you when I found out you’re my mate.” David said finishing his buttons.
“That’s not fair! I don’t have a whole data base of people looking into you. Just Tonya and she’s kinda scary when she’s mad.” I said and David sat by me laughing.
“I don’t have a whole data base of people looking into you. Listen, the mate bond feels like magic. Most humans refer to it as love at first sight. You feel sparks when we kiss or heat maybe. It’s different for everyone. It takes longer for that feelings to manifest fully in humans. For me, and my kind. It’s like a boom all at once. I already know I love you and we’ll be together forever. So moving in is just part of that. It’s not weird around here for that to happen days after a mate is found.” David said and I was stuck at the I love you part still.
“David.” I said and he nodded.
“You know I’m probably going to always love you just a little more then you love me. That’s ok, because I waited so long to find you.” David leaned forward and placing a kiss on my lips. One that was soft and sweet. I rubbed his cheek as our lips parted ways. “Now, I’m going to go to the office and make the arrangements.” He said as I nodded.
