Katherine's POV
“What?” I shook my head, my breath becoming ragged. “You are pulling my legs, right? This isn't …” I paused as I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my chest. It was as though my heart was being shredded into many tiny pieces.
“It will hurt but not forever. You'll live,” Dante said nonchalantly, a sly grin spreading across his face.
His smile was like a knife twisting in my heart. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, and before I knew it, they were streaming down my face. The shaman and Elders present looked equally shocked, but none of them said a word, not even Archibald.
Before I could process what was happening, Dante spoke again. "My Luna will be with us shortly," he announced excitedly.
Seconds after, there was a soft knock at the door, and Dante gestured to the guard to open it. As the door swung open, my heart shattered when I saw who stood on the other side - my stepsister, Susan.
I couldn't breathe, couldn't move. I felt my chest tightened. Susan? How could he? What did I do to deserve this kind of hurt?
My tears flowed freely now, my world crashing down around me. Not only had Dante rejected me as his Luna, but he had chosen my own flesh and blood to take my place.
Dante paid no mind to my hurt and anguish, introducing Susan to the room in a booming voice. "This is my chosen Luna," he declared, pride evident in his tone.
I wanted to scream, to lash out, to demand an explanation, but the words caught in my throat, replaced by a torrent of sobs.
Dante turned to me then, his expression unreadable. "You're welcome to stay in the mansion, Katherine," he said, "but you must remain invisible and not interfere in our affairs. That's the only way we can have peace.”
I didn't wait to hear or see more. I stormed out of the room, tears blinding me. I slammed my bedroom door shut and collapsed on the bed, sobbing uncontrollably.
How could Dante do this to me? After all we had been through, all the love and trust we had shared, he had chosen my own step sister over me. The betrayal cut like a knife, leaving me feeling utterly broken.
I barely registered the sound of my door opening, nor the tentative footsteps approaching my bed. It wasn't until I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder that I looked up, my vision blurred by tears.
"Leave!" I choked out, my voice ragged.
But Edwin didn't leave. "I'm sorry this happened," he murmured, his own voice thick with emotion.
I shook my head. "I don't understand anything," I cried, my heart hurting. "How could he do this to me?" I sat up and met his gaze with red-rimmed eyes. "I trusted him, Edwin. I gave him everything, and he just... cast me aside.”
“I'm really sorry, Alpha. I can't even begin to imagine how you must be feeling right now."
Fresh tears started spilling down my cheeks. “Leave,” I whispered. But Edwin didn't move an inch. “Get out of my room, damnit!!” I growled.
There was a moment of silence, and then the sound of Edwin's retreating footsteps. As soon as he shut the door, the dam broke, and I burst into tears once again. "Father, I wish you were here," I cried out, the ache in my heart overwhelming. I missed him so much at this moment, and the pain of his absence made me start contemplating the unthinkable.
"Maybe it would be better if I just... ended it all," I whispered to myself, the darkness of the thought terrifying, yet tempting. I had nothing left, no one to turn to, nothing to live for and the agony of Dante's betrayal consumed me. The emptiness and loneliness were suffocating.
I cried until I eventually succumbed to exhaustion, falling into a restless sleep. But when I woke, the hurt was still there, a constant companion. It was already evening, so I decided to venture out to the garden, hoping the fresh air would clear my head.
As I walked, I heard the faint sound of voices, and my curiosity got the better of me. I moved closer, and to my surprise, I saw Dante, Susan, and an unknown man engaged in a hushed conversation.
"...get rid of Katherine, and we will finally have peace," Dante said, his voice dripping with malice.
My blood ran cold. They were planning to kill me. I turned to flee, but in my haste my foot caught on a tree branch, snapping it in two. The sound echoed through the garden, and the trio spun towards me.
"Katherine!" Dante snarled, his eyes blazing with anger. "You shouldn't have heard that."
"Run!" I screamed to myself, adrenaline coursing through my veins as I fled. I had to get as far away as possible, but my path led me to the edge of a towering cliff. I skidded to a stop, my heart pounding as I turned to face my pursuers.
"It's over, Katherine," Dante growled, his expression devoid of any remnant of the love I had once seen in his eyes.
I shook my head. "Dante, how could you? The rogue attacks, it was all you, wasn't it?" For some weird reason, my instincts told me he was but I needed confirmation.
He sneered, confirming my worst fears. "You were always just a means to an end, my dear. A pawn in my game.”
I felt my knees grow weak, the revelation shattering what was left of my heart. "The Elders need to know the truth," I choked out, my voice laced with desperation. “I have to tell Archibald.” With that, I started walking away.
Behind me, I heard Dante and Susan whispering. "You can't just let her go, Dante," Susan hissed. "She'll tell the Elders everything. They can't find out about this."
Dante remained silent, and I could almost feel the tension in the air.
"Come on! Do something!!" Susan insisted, her voice rising.
Suddenly, Dante's words cut through the silence, sending a chill down my spine. "Richard, get her and kill her. Make sure she doesn't survive.”
My heart raced as I quickened my pace, desperate to put as much distance between myself and the impending danger. But I had barely taken a few steps when I heard Richard, charging after me.
I ran as fast as I could, but he was too fast. My foot caught on a stone, and I fell to the ground, the impact knocking the wind out of me. Before I could even try to scramble to my feet, Richard was standing over me, with Dante and Susan just a few paces behind.
Richard glared down at me, his expression cold and merciless. And then, without a moment's hesitation, he plunged his blade into my side.
The stinging pain was immediate, and I cried out, the metallic taste of blood filling my mouth. I knew in that instant that the blade was laced with wolfsbane.
Dante and Susan came closer, their shadows casting a dark cloud over me. "Why, Dante?" I gasped, the words barely audible through the gurgling of my own blood. "Why are you doing this?”
Dante's eyes were empty of any trace of the love I had once seen. "This is the only way. Farewell, Katherine. Give my regards to your father.”
"Farewell, Katherine," Dante's words echoed in my mind, laced with a cruel disregard that made my heart ache.
The pain I was feeling was excruciating, spreading through my entire body as I lay on the cold, hard ground.
I struggled to cry out, to beg for help, but the wolfsbane coursing through my veins had robbed me of my strength. All I could do was make strangled gasps, my vision blurring as the pool of blood around me grew.
"Please," I choked out, the word barely audible even to my own ears. "Anyone, please help..."
But all around me was quiet, except for the faint rustling of the leaves in the gentle breeze. I felt my resolve slipping as the darkness seemed to urge me to surrender, to let go.
"Maybe it's better this way," I thought, the will to live slowly fading. "At least the pain will come to an end."
Just as I was about to give in, a shadow loomed over me, and I heard a voice ask, "Are you alright?”
I looked up, trying to make out the face of the person standing above me, but it was a blur. Fear gripped me as I thought it was a rogue that had come to finish me off. "Just kill me already," I rasped. "Make it quick."
The voice laughed, a deep, rich sound that sent shivers down my spine. "I am no killer. My name is Lucian," he said, his tone gentle. "Who are you and what happened?”
I tried to answer, but my vision began to blur, and my words slurred. The pain was too much, and I felt myself slipping away.
The voice grew distant, and I felt a darkness closing in around me. I didn't try to fight it, instead I embraced, letting the darkness consume me.
