Prologue
She stared at the sea. Black and silent. Still and deep. The last time the tides were high was nearly a century ago. When the world was cleared of all magic. When the wicked were cleansed from the earth. It was believed they were taken to the bottom of the sea. Were they were trapped forever. She clenched the chain around her neck. That was a myth she would never believe. One she loathed. But one she'd never forget. For it was one that tore her family apart. The skies were filled with shimmering specks of white light. But the surface of the sea was oblivious to it's beauty. For it remained in it's eternal darkness. But there. In the middist of the sea, Samari swore she saw something arise from the water. Something black. As dark as night. It shimmered as it raised above the surface of the sea. The irregular shape slowly took the form of a man. Samari locked eyes with the ethereal figure. Lost in the depth of it's golden eyes. She could have sworn the creature looked familiar. She had seen it somewhere. But where? She opened her mouth to speak, when the figure vanished into the dark. But as she tore her eyes from the space where the figure was a moment before, she noticed something gleamering on the sand, a silver ring lay before her. So alien to her knowledge of jews. She looped it around her middle finger. And just as she did. The world seemed to spin until all she could see was black.
