We stayed cold with each other for an entire week.
I went straight back to my parents' place.
Austin called me twice. I didn't pick up, and he didn't try again.
Later, he ended up in the hospital. A friend of his called me, asking me to visit.
Honestly, I was still too angry to go.
But Austin's friend said he'd been calling my name in his sleep while delirious with a fever.
My heart softened. I cooked some chicken soup and brought it to the hospital.
What I saw there was Daisy spoon-feeding Austin porridge with utmost care.
My face fell. Without a word, I turned and walked away.
Austin spotted me, pushed Daisy aside, ripped out his IV, and chased after me.
In the hospital corridor, he grabbed my wrist, his eyes full of pleading.
"Summer, don't go!"
It was the first time I'd seen him look so wretched—pale skin, dark circles under his eyes, dry, cracked lips.
But he still looked good, and my heart softened again.
"What am I supposed to do, stay and watch you and Daisy play happy families?"
"Daisy and I are nothing. I only see her as a sister."
