It was our fifth anniversary. Austin had kept it from me and planned a surprise proposal with his friends.
On a bustling street, he got down on one knee and held up a sparkling diamond ring. "Summer, marry me."
I was moved, extending my right hand and waiting for him to slip the ring onto my ring finger.
But just then, Austin's phone rang.
He gave me an awkward smile and answered it. I could not hear what the person on the other end was saying, but Austin's expression turned tense. Without saying a word, he stood up, hailed a taxi by the roadside, and disappeared before I could even react.
